It's an Americanism. I'm not sure who gkmacca writes for but in British English the comma comes after the quotation mark (unless the quoted text makes up a full sentence, in which case the comma can signify the end of the sentence). Perhaps it's being adopted in this country in some circles now, but I can assure you it is an American trait.

Anyone who's read GK's posts on here or back in KT days would have been well aware - and probably appreciative - of the subtleties and guile of his writing. To stoop to the level of self promotion in such an area was unexpected and essentially undermines his own standing.
