Alisson Wonderland

I think the best judges of Alisson are Roma fan, and thus I've be checking out some of their English forums to see their reaction to the news of his sale.

Most are disappointed he's going to leave, but are satisfied by the price we are paying.
Some of the comments I read:

  • They rate him as top 5/10 in the world.
  • He's single handily won them games this year
  • His distribution is good
  • He's a keeper-sweeper who's quick off his line.
  • He was world class last year (albeit it was one year).
  • He should f*ck off, if he wants to leave them, as he's indicated. LOL.
We are obviously paying an insane price. But if he gives us 10 years of good service, I think no one will actually care, as is the case with the VVD fee now.

That's quite positive.

It's hard to say whether this guy is the real deal or not based on one season in Serie A that probably none of us watch much of but for now I'm just thankful we're not starting another season with Ming / Karius in goal.

He'll have one of the best defenders in the world and VVD protecting him, how bad can he be?

I repeat, Karius will not be our #1 keeper next year. I like saying that out loud.
Is signing Allison the best the club can do for the situation we are in right now?

Let's look at our options;
  • Sign Pope: Yeah he's a lot cheaper but I can already hear a section of fans blaming the club for taking a risk on a cheaper option. "We needed a keeper to propel us into challengers, why scrimp, why not go all out etc".
  • Sign keeper x : Keeper x plays in Germany or Italy and is regarded as a new up and coming keeper who could be the next De Gea or Courtois. He could also be the next Karius. "Why did we risk signing another Karius? We need someone ready now etc".
  • Sign Oblak : Yes please, probably best keeper in the world with De Gea.
  • Sign Allisson: It can't be said we haven't splashed the cash to replace a priority position. He was courted by Chelsea and Madrid if you'll believe the reports.
So we've gone all out, we signed a new #1 and we've broken the transfer record. No musings in the media that he's here to compete with Karius or some bullshit like that. Similar to VVD signing. He's here to improve us, immediately. Let's hope Allison also see's it that way and he isn't bothered by the price tag, he actually embraces it.

I know next to nothing about his talent but he's highly rated on the back of a good season but we wanted a keepers lads, we got one and no expense was spared.

Not gonna read the thread as I’m sure there’s plenty of negativity in it. He’s a good keeper and waaaaaaay better than what we have now. Don’t care about his fee, he’ll make a huge difference. Been wanting this kind of signing for years. That’s a top keeper, new mids too so just another CB an attacker or two for a new spine.

Am I in the minority here wanting Alission over Oblak because of how much better he is with his feet? Distribution is so important in this team, I think it's why the inclusion of Karius over Ming made us look a little better last year, despite the fact he's on par, if not worst than Ming.

Allison is now the best goalie ever. And teh sexy.

My main grip with Alisson...actually two gripes. One the amount of times when he saves a shot he pushes it back into the danger area. I don't understand why he can't parry away from goal like you're meant to. Two his name...what a pussy having a girls name.

I said this above, but I'll say it again, in most of those saves where the ball comes back into the danger area it is an excellent reaction save from relatively short distance. With that kind of save it is a fallacy that the keeper can choose to deflect the ball wherever they wish. They keep it out any which way they can, and have no control whatsoever where it goes. Have a look at De Gea's incredible reaction saves. A lot of the time it goes back out into the danger area, but it is incredible that it was kept out in the first place.

How insecure must you be about your own masculinity, that you actually care whether another man has a name that sounds like a girl's??

It doesn't just sound like a girl's name, it is a girl's name.

Would never have happened in my day. It started with Patrik Berger and his alice band, I swear.
