Ok, I'll admit, I've had my tongue in cheek a little in this thread.
I just find it strange that you have spent the past number of pages trying to excuse the fact that someone that is 27 has apparently had sex with a minor, but bringing up the ages of consent in other countries. Why that is relevant is beyond me. the only logical reason I can come to for you trying to argue that point, is that you have done the same? If not, I apologise, but what is the reason for arguing the point?
The fact is that he has been arrested, because what he has apparently done is illegal in the UK. That fact can't change, no matter how many examples you can bring from other countries, and what justification you want to bring to it.
And to clarify, I don't think FFF and redninja and whoever else said it, are in the same ballpark. Maybe sleeping with someone 15, when you're 17-19, or even definitely doing it when you're 19, is not the same as someone 27 doing it.
See, you're at it again. I've practically ignored the discussion re. Johnson yet you are now saying I'm trying to excuse him. You really need to stop it. And that even aside from the fact that you are considering all 15 yrs old to be of equal sexual and mental maturity, which is clearly not the case anywhere.
My point throughout has been, as I've stated, that the age of consent in the UK (as it is everywhere else I imagine) is based around religious and cultural mores rather than scientific or medical evidence, which is undoubtedly contrary. The fact that the age of consent in many other countries, even those of similar cultures (e.g. Canada, 14 yrs) is far less would seem to indicate that the age of consent is based on British conservatism rather than logic. That is the debate in which I'm interested, that there is no consensus on what is a reasonable age.
So are you actually disgusted that men may become involved with girls under the age of legal consent (16), truly believing that girls under that age are too immature for sexual relations or is it just that you are indignant that men (of any age - age being irrelevant in the eyes of the UK law, though I've just seen that is not the case in Germany for example) may be breaking the law here and it is the fact they are law-breakers that has you so irate ?
