Manager criticising players openly seem to be the norm now?

"For this, he must work, he must think, he must work for the team. Some dribbling or two crosses don't make him a good player. He must keep his feet on the floor. He's a good player, he has a fantastic talent but he is not a top player at this moment. For me, he's a good guy, but it could be because when you are young you read the newspapers which say, 'I am the top, I am the top'.

Well his form has dipped considerably, so maybe he needs a kick up the arse.

If Johnsonis giving it 'the big I am', then the bottom line is he's won fuck all yet.

This sad phenomenon of a young player being destroyed by his own ego is all too common. Anybody recall Francis Jeffers, the so-called "fox in the box" sold by Everton to Arsenal after a few good games? He was sacked from Sheffield Wednesday last year and is now playing in the Australian A-League.

Some of us here wanted him (Adam not Jeffers) at LFC after the string of good games....

They all get too much too soon and probably not surprisingly lose the drive they had to make it as a footballer. It seems peculiarly common in England and Ireland, but I'm sure it happens everywhere.

One of Ireland's best recent examples is Anthony Stokes, broke all sorts of scoring records for the Arsenal underage sides but Wenger didn't bother holding on to him. And now I know why, it's because he's a nutjob who is very fond of a night out.

He has got time to turn it around but he'd want to start soon

He's obviously got the talent, but its the age old "i.m dead good" ideology where effort doesn't equal performance. He thinks turning up alone will make the team better.

isn't he like 200 kg now?

Who, Adam Johnson?

City need to ditch the 3 defensive midfield bollocks and play him. Milner played some good stuff for Villa in the middle last season so he should get a few games there. They would look like a much better outfit.

I don't like managers doing this either, but maybe young players now are so full of themsselves that this might be the only way of getting through to one or two of them.

yep, it's incredible what even the youngsters get paid, and it's no surprise that a few of them take their eye off the ball (no pun intended) because of it. a mate of mine in mancheser works for a big accountancy firm who handle loads of footballers (they virtually all have Ltd companies now to channel their image rights etc) and he said the stuff that came in with one of the yongster's ( PM me if you want his name) records was just beyond belief: HMV receipts as long as your leg totalling thousands of pounds, tens of thousands more at harvey nicholls, and that's the tip of the iceberg.

i think the player had made about 2 appearances at the time. it's lunacy.

Adam Johnson is a good prospect. If he thinks he's so good that he doesn't need to work hard it's probably because so many people tell him he's great that he has become bigheaded. He needs someone to tell him he's on the wrong course. Good management from Mancini.
