25 years ago to the day, 56 people gave their lives in support of their team, succumbing to a fire started by a cigarette igniting rubbish that had piled up underneath the stand. It smoldered unnoticed for a while until the flames started to lick the seats and smoke began billowing up and out.

For those of you who've seen the footage, you'll know the frightening speed at which the fire spread, and the inferno raced from one end of the stand to the other, people fighting their way onto the pitch - the little old lady being helped out by the coppers, the man being rolled on the ground as fellow fans tried to beat out the flames, the policeman running onto the pitch with his hair ablaze.

No matter how shit this season has been, and no matter how shit it gets next year, we of all people know the insignificance of these trivial concerns in comparison to events of this magnitude.

56 souls, forever in attendance at Valley Parade.

RIP, YNWA

RIP.

For those of you who haven't seen the footage, this is the original broadcast by Yorkshire Tv unedited.

As SR said, the speed it spreads is frightening.

Mods feel free to remove it if deemed inappropriate.

Between 3:00 and 3:20 it really takes off at a frightening rate.

RIP to all those who lost their lives. YNWA

I remember seeing the footage recently, and it's amazing how quickly it took hold, the heat from it and ho wlong it seems to take to get people out of stands
Terrible

regards

I remember being shown this footage in school as an example of why you shouldn't start fires even small ones.

Horrorifying viewing.

RIP

Sorry, only saw the last post for some reason when reading the rest it's quite obvious what it was.

Anyways, the sentiment remains. RIP.

A truly scary event.

May the souls of the dead find happiness in the existence that follows.

The congregation at the memorial service yesterday sang YNWA before the minutes silence. Truly tragic event and one that remains way too vividly in my mind as I watched it unfold on Grandstand all those years ago. YNWA and RIP to the 56.
