Real stunned by £80m tag on Zlatan Ibrahimovic
Jonathan Northcroft

The overheated football transfer market is showing no sign of cooling, with Real Madrid hot on the trail of yet another exorbitantly expensive forward, Internazionale’s Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Representatives of the player met Real officials earlier this month and have also held talks with Barcelona, after Inter indicated they would be willing to sell their leading scorer.

The fee Inter are looking for is understood to be close to the world record £80m Real Madrid agreed for Cristiano Ronaldo. Barcelona were scared off by the price tag. Florentino Perez, Real Madrid’s new president, must have taken a deep breath but has not dropped his interest — even though he has also signed Kaka for £56m. Real are expected to sign Valencia goalscorer David Villa for £34m this week and are chasing Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso, who might cost upwards of £20m.

Perez is budgeting for an outlay of about €300m (£255m) this summer to build a “spectacular†team and argues much of the money can be recouped. His motto is “the most expensive things are the cheapest†because great players repay much of their huge fees through increased ticket sales and greater commercial contracts. He also plans to raise funds via player sales and is willing to offload Real’s entire Dutch contingent, which has put Premier League clubs on alert. Tottenham are interested in striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, available for £15m, while Arjen Robben has been offered to Liverpool with Gabriel Heinze as makeweights in any deal for Alonso.

Ibrahimovic, 27, has scored 57 goals in 88 Serie A appearances for Inter but relations have cooled between the Swede and his coach, Jose Mourinho. Inter are unlikely to get £80m for the striker who, as the best-paid player in the world until Kaka moved to Real Madrid, also has hefty wage demands, but Perez could try to tempt the Italians with a player-plus-cash deal involving the Argentinian Gonzalo Higuain.

At home, Portsmouth confirmed that Glen Johnson is likely to leave this summer. Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool are interested in the England full-back, who left Stamford Bridge in 2007. A fee of £20m could be the asking price.

Having ruled out Ibrahimovic, Barça are competing with Manchester United — and, inevitably, Real — for Franck Ribery for a fee of about £65m. United have also made an inquiry about Barcelona’s Samuel Eto’o, who with one year left on his contract, is available for less than £30m, but the Cameroonian striker’s salary demands make Manchester City stronger suitors. United are on the brink of signing Antonio Valencia from Wigan after making a formal offer of £17.5m for the Ecuador winger and are also chasing Lyons striker Karim Benzema.

Meanwhile, respected sources in Italy report Paolo Maldini, recently retired after 25 years with AC Milan, is about to join Chelsea’s coaching staff. In any other week, that would be big news but yesterday it was just a footnote with the transfer market in such a feverish state.

How would Ibra fit into their side.. unless Kaka is played on the right and Ronaldo on the left?

I'd be content if we did the bulkour "bargain basement" shopping from Real Madrid's unwanted basket.

Oh this BS has to stop, it will lead to the collapse of club football as we know it.
[/quote]

nope, it just means the top teams will get stronger with the lower to middle teams unable to close the gap. well, no change there then.

Its classic Mourinho, he is massaging the ego of Ibrahimovic. Mourinho has often said that Ibrahimovic is the equal of Ronaldo and this price tag is merely another attempt to highlight this.

So can anyone who's watched them enough tell me if Huntelaar is worth a go?

Robin used to eulogise about him that much I expected him to be amazing.

I wasn't necessarily talking about just the financial implications to clubs, it could also result in some ruling eventually (from UEFA) that severely hinders the top clubs transfer operations.

Yes, because slapping an exhorbitant transfer fee onto soemone's head automatically makes them the world's best.

Quick. Put a 40M valuation on Dossena's bald swede - HE'S THE NEW MALDINI.

Ryan.. I think RM is referring to his goal scoring record and not his price tag. 57 in 87 is not be scoffed at. El Nino has 50 in 84, albeit in a tougher league.

No one scoffs at his 'goal scoring record' - people scoff at the fact he rarely scores against the big boys & never scores past the group stage of the champions league.

well, not shit shit just not good enough to be mentioned in the same breath of the pantheon of current strikers/forwards.

So if the upper tier of strikers includes Torres, Eto'o, Villa and the like, who does Ibrahimovic sit alongside?

agreed, but not a 'great striker' like he thinks he is (i don't care what he can do with an orange)

yes, 'shit' is patently not true but I don't think he is worth 20+ million let alone 40+, 50+ 60+ plus

Nah, he isn't worth ridiculous amounts of money.

Out of interest though, Berbatov for 30M or Ibrahimovic for 30M?
