I make that a squad of 22 over-21s of which 6 are home grown

This leaves room for three new recruits over 21 to replace Masher, two of which would have to be 'home grown'

A new LB and auxilliary FB plus [Masher replacement]

You've got Shelvey at centre back.. and there will be departures and arrivals really Dee most of whom look to be British based if reports are true. Looks like we've more or less got the bare minimum though 🙂

Yeah, I think our reserves will help us make up the 25 rather than supplementing it by way of the unlimited U21 rule.

Hopefully we don't buy too many duffers this window and leave ourselves in a good position to build on the squad in the future.

I say sell Cavalieri and buy one English or Welsh goalkeeper from the Championship.

i count 13 or 14 in that...

Pacheco is classified as homegrown isnt he because he joined at 17?
Yep - 3 seasons in country before youre 21

He doesn't count at all if he is U-21 I thought.
Exactly - but was just pointing out you dont actually have to be English to qualify as home grown.

To count they have to have been with an English club for 3 years under the age of 21 and be over 21 on the date of registration.

Only six of our current squad qualify

Isn't cole classed as homegrown as he is ENGLISH?
Oops - fixed!

Also corrected El Zhar - he does not qualify as he was with us for only one year as an U21.

NB. Nemeth won't count either as he was with us for 1.5 years under 21

Are you sure about this???

it seems to work against any player under the age of 21 - i thought the rule was implimented to increase the opportunities provided to Young British talent...

If you are English/Welsh(?) then it is highly unlikely you wouldn't meet the criteria.

The squad is limited to 25 senior players (of which 8 must be 'home grown') plus as many U21s as you fancy.

Full Rules

You don't have to have 8 HG players, but you can't have foreigners instead, eg just a squad of 17 foreign players plus lots of U21s is acceptable.

Absolutely - but it would be wise NOT to name the U21s in the 25-man squad as it would allow any HG free agents to be added during the season.

For Clarity
EPL website said:
A home grown player is defined as one who, irrespective of his nationality or age, has been registered with any club affiliated to the Football Association or the Welsh Football Association for a period, continuous or not, of three entire seasons or 36 months prior to his 21st birthday (or the end of the season during which he turns 21).

For the purposes of this rule, the season is deemed to run from the date the first transfer window closes until the final match of the campaign.
In keeping with UEFA guidelines, an Under 21 player is defined as one who is under the age of 21 on 1st January in the year in which the season commences. For the 2010/11 campaign Under 21 players will have been born on or after 1st January 1989.

EXCEPTIONAL CIRCUMSTANCES
The 25-man squads must be submitted to the Premier League by 5pm on the day following the close of each transfer window. For the 2010/11 season the first window will close at 6pm on 31st August and final squads must be registered by 5pm on 1st September. Before then Clubs will not be required to name their squads and may select their teams from any registered players.

While the transfer windows are open, clubs may change their squads as many times as they want. However they will only be able to make alterations outside the windows if there are exceptional circumstances and the changes are approved by the Premier League board.

For example, if a club has two out of three goalkeepers injured they may be permitted to bring in a replacement under the guidelines drawn up by a specially formed working party.

Players in the 25-man squads who go out on loan to Football League clubs may not be replaced. However they may reclaim their place on their return.

Clubs do not have to name a full squad of 25 if they do not have that many contracted players and in this instance they may add free agents outside the transfer window. However if they have 25 eligible contracted players, they must be named.

Similarly, clubs do not have to name eight home grown players if they do not have that many but that would mean operating with a reduced squad.

The system will be simple enough to administer. Clubs will register their players via an online form which automatically flags up if they have named too many players who do not qualify as Home-Grown.

erm, does that mean that a 17yr old slovak youth player with liverpool, who spends 3 seasons on loan in Belgium, would qualify as home grown because LFC had his registration throughout? In otherword if you spend a season on loan abroad does that count at part of the 3 yr rule.

When you get loaned out don't you register with the host club?

Do we need to sign English players? Yes or no?
You are allowed a maximum of 17 'foreigners' in a squad of 25 over-21s. To maximise the senior squad we have room for two more 'home grown' over-21s.

We can have as many U21s as we want on top of the 25 man squad.

If I'm understanding this correctly :-

Nemeth, is currently classified as an U21 for this season (born after 01/01/89), but would qualifiy as a home grown player from next season - if loaning him overseas doesn't mean transferring his registration.

Wilson is an U21, but because we signed him aged 18, when he reaches 21 will be classified as a homegrown player despite being Scottish.

Insua, since he hasn't left yet, is still classified as an U21 for this season as well and from next season would be classified as home grown. It also means that he would be classified as home grown in England if he moved back here at any point in the future (possibly the same for Nemeth).

I think Plessis might qualify as home grown - he's been here 3 season & was classified as U21 last season.

N'gog is classified as U21 this season, and this being his 3rd season at the club, means from next season he'll be classified as homegrown.

Pacheco, Ayala, etc will al be considered home grown if still here beyong the age of 21.

So to summarize. We can only have a maximum of 17 foreigners in our squad, who are over the age of 21? The rest needs to be shipped out?

Got ya...thanks.

I count 15 from the list above and 16 including Masher. So we can sign one more foreigners who is above 21, assuming the rest of the squad remains the same.

Anything else means one foreign squaddie has to leave.

It kinda fits that Roy has been looking to offload sharpish.

Also Degen is not in that list. So he needs to leave first, if we are to add a foreigner. Defour deal needs to wait then.

If we assume Masher, Degen & El Zhar are leaving.. or at least not included in the squad... then we only have 12 overseas players... so we have room for 5 foreigners & 2 home grown players.

N'Gog & Nemeth are still classified as U21's this season, so don't need to be included in the squad of 25.

So even is Masher, Degen & El Zhar stay... we currently have room for 2 overseas players in the 25.
