The who should we sign in January thread

Thought the same. Its been known that Arteta has some sort of agenda against some signings the club has made prior to him.
Agenda ? Or he just doesn't feel they are good enough or maybe don't suit whatever system it is he's trying to play?

He's a better 4-4-2 CB imo than Mustafi, Luiz or Holding ... yet, he doesn't get minutes.
He is highly rated in France.
I'd be stoked if we got him for 10 million.

That's extremely odd. Why would you give up on a 19 year old?

Attitude concerns? Poor trainer?

[article]Liverpool have shifted their position ahead of next month's transfer window and are now actively looking to add to the squad by targeting players with specific characteristics.

Anfield chiefs had no plans to make moves in the transfer market in January, after a summer that saw them sign Greek defender Kostas Tsimikas, Champions League winner Thiago Alcantara and Diogo Jota in a spending spree worth over £70m.

It was an outlay that exceeded the club's initial transfer spending projection, with manager Jurgen Klopp convinced the additions handed him a chance to compete in all competitions this season.

Season-ending injuries affecting defenders Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez did not immediately alter Liverpool's transfer plans, with the club hoping they could navigate a path to success this season without further investment.

Yet ongoing injury issues for central defender Joel Matip have forced a change of heart and sundayworld.com have now been told that Liverpool are actively looking to bolster their squad next month, as they look to sign a young defender with top tier experience in the English game.

While Liverpool have been linked with RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano and Schalke's Ozan Kabak are players of interest to Liverpool, the prospect of signing the duo in January and asking them to acclimatize quickly to the English game is not seen as likely.

With the club keen to avoid buying players at the back end of their careers, Brighton's Ben White has been mentioned as a possible target who may be available next month and the 23-year-old is on a list of targets drawn up by the club.

Liverpool legend and Sunday World columnist John Aldridge believes the club needs to be bold in their transfer dealing, as he suggests they should be targeting a player who can make an instant impact in early January.

"Liverpool need to make their move to bring in a central defender and they should be working on that now," Aldo told us.

"While Fabinho can slot in at centre-back and do a good job, Jordan Henderson could play in there at a push, and young lads like Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams are showing real potential, they need some back-up in the centre of the defence after everything that has happened.

"That player needs to be ready to come to the club when the transfer window opens on January 1st, he needs to have a good fitness record – and also have top level experience.

"Van Dijk and Gomez are not coming back any time soon, Matip doesn't seem to be able to play a run of games in succession, so Liverpool need to sign a player who is good enough to play right away and may be a natural successor to Matip or Van Dijk in the future.

"That won't be easy, but the run of bad luck they have had with injuries this season means something has to be done now."

Liverpool showed what can be possible in the January transfer window when they pulled off a £75m deal to sign Van Dijk from Southampton two years ago and now this change of transfer policy means they are on the look-out for a similar coup in next month's window.[/article]

[article]Liverpool have shown an interest in signing Manchester City and Spain centre-back Eric Garcia, according to reports in England.

Barcelona tried to sign Garcia, who left Camp Nou in 2017, in the summer but could not reach an agreement over a fee with City.

Garcia, 19, is out of contract in the summer, though, and is set to leave for free having told the Premier League side he doesn't want to renew.

Therefore, City could be more willing to do business in January given the prospect of losing the youngster for nothing at the end of the season.

Garcia has expressed a desire to return to Barça, but Liverpool have emerged as a potential competitor for his signature.

The Premier League champions have been left devastated by injuries in defence, with Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez both out long-term.

However, whether City would be willing to negotiate with a Premier League rival in January remains a different issue altogether.

Barça are confident that sooner or later -- in June if not January -- they will bring Garcia back to the club where he developed. [/article]

As if there is any way City are going to sell him to us in January. Zero chance. I thought he looked decent when he played though. Maybe for the Summer.

[article]Liverpool are thinking of a move for Lille star Renato Sanches, should Georginio Wijnaldum leave in the January transfer window.

That’s according to Le 10 Sport, who say the Premier League champions are ‘thinking of’ signing the Portuguese midfielder.

Sanches has been the star of the show for Lille this season, building on his impressive form from last season when he was named in the Team of the Season by newspaper L’Equipe.

His return to form has ‘caught the eye’ of several English clubs according to Le 10 Sport and ‘in particular’ Liverpool.

The website explain that the midfielder is showing his qualities ‘more and more’ for the Ligue 1 side and Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp is an admirer.

He is ‘very attentive’ to Sanches’ performances, and his profile ‘appeals to him very much’.

They are eyeing the 23-year-old as a replacement for Wijnaldum, who could leave the club in the winter window after failing to sign a new contract in the summer.

He is free to negotiate with clubs come the beginning of January, and there is a belief Liverpool may look to sell on the cheap as opposed to losing him on a free.

Barcelona are particularly keen, and if they do make an early move to secure his signature, Sanches would become the number one option to replace him.

There is no mention of Lille’s stance, but they may have no say in the matter given their current financial crisis, which could necessitate a fire-sale of their top talent to balance the books.

That is presumably something Liverpool would be keen to take advantage of, but it seems it will all rest on whether Barcelona push to get Wijnaldum early in January.[/article]

Renato Sanchez? Lol
Definitely bullshit.
No offence to King B, but ain't no way in hell we're buying him and the fact that he's mentioned means that the journos are just fishing.
Quite fashionable nowadays to be linked with LFC.

What happened to that Betis defender we were supposedly signing in the summer?

Moved too soon when he went to Bayern and the Swansea loan move didn't help him either. There was a good player in him and the move to Lille has helped him.

Aouar please, if it is true that French football will be facing a financial squeeze. Even if it's just to have him terrorize City twice every season.

So those that watch Euro footy more than me, would we get anyone to slot in who's significantly better than Phillips /Williams?

They've done so, so well.

They know the system and there must be a chance that a new high profile player comes in and doesn't hit the ground running?

Would love us to sign someone to significantly improve us, but starting to doubt we could.

We still need someone so that Fabinho can move back to midfield.

There are a few options out there, but it's gonna cost us. If Klopp signs anyone it's going to be a defender with pace, has to be.

[article]Liverpool have joined Paris Saint-Germain in showing an interest in Roma defender Roger Ibañez.

That’s according to AS Roma Live, who say the defender has been added to the growing list of centre-backs the Reds are seemingly looking at.

As you’ll be more than aware by now, Liverpool are in desperate need of a new centre back in January after losing Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez to long-term injuries.

Joel Matip has also suffered with niggling injuries in recent weeks, meaning adding to the squad would be a smart move for the Premier League champions.

They have subsequently been linked with defenders across Europe, with players in Spain, Germany and now, it seems, Italy all on their list.

AS Roma Live report that after a ‘convincing’ start to the season, Ibañez is proving to be a ‘flagship’ player for the Serie A side.

He had interest from the Premier League in the summer, with Leicester and Tottenham both making €30m offers for the Brazilian.

That ‘line up of fans’ is ‘bound to increase’ according to the website, who say that PSG have joined the race after their director of football Leonardo identified the player as a possible replacement for Thiago Silva.

They, though, would find it difficult to match Roma’s €35-40m asking price in January but that is not a problem for Liverpool, who are ‘ready to make important investments’ to cover the loss of Van Dijk in particular.

Whether they would be willing to match Roma’s demands isn’t mentioned, but it seems Ibañez is certainly one of the profiles they are keeping an eye on.[/article]

Strange link. He signed on loan from Atalanta in Jan 2020 for 18 months with obligation to buy for (€8m plus €2m add ons) - unless they buy him earlier in order to sell him I guess?

Are Liverpool looking to bring anyone in?

As things stand The Athletic understands that Liverpool are unlikely to make any additions to their squad during the January window. Centre-back is the one area where Klopp is short following serious injuries to Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez but teenager Rhys Williams and Nat Phillips have stepped up and impressed the manager.

Teenager Harvey Elliott's outstanding form on loan at Blackburn Rovers sparked talk that his stay at Ewood Park could be cut short but currently Liverpool don't have any plans to recall him.
