Liverpool, Wataru upto?

Yet that midfield outplayed and shut out lots of big teams - I think fans were a bit too harsh on them then and now. What they didn’t have is dominant athleticism, which was later provided by Fabinho and I think Macca and Endo are similar to Milner and Hendo in being the workhorse kind of midfielders with Gini/Gravy adding atheticism and agility and in Gini’s case, world-class ball protection.

Love me a bit of world class ball protection.

You’re not placing a lot of importance in the positional discipline of a defensive midfielder.

No argument from me that Endo has more positional discipline as a #6 than Hendo did. But Klopp did play Hendo there for probably close to a hundred games and somehow made it work.

My point is that Endo doesn’t have the dominant athleticism of a prime Fabinho, so he’s closer to Hendo in that regard. Even though yes, he’s positionally more disciplined.

I’m quite liking the balance of the Endo-MacAllister-Gravenberch midfield. Not sure it’s the strongest midfield 3 we can possibly play if everyone is fit (I’d love to see them take on Trent-Szobo-Jones midfield in a friendly - any bets on who would win?), but it’s giving our attackers a solid platform to be creative and they shield the defence well. They actually somehow remind me of the “Brexit midfield” of old (Hendo in the #6, Wijnaldum and Milner), which wasn’t very popular with fans, but won us many big games. We cannot call this iteration of midfield workhorses with a bit of flair “Brexit” - it’s Japan, Argentina and Netherlands, after all, so how about “United Nations?” :)

Gravy still needs a bit of seasoning (pun not intended) to get to Wijnaldum’s level, but the raw attributes are there - hopefully his development into a more well-rounded and positionally aware midfielder will continue under whoever replaces Klopp next season.
I love that we have strength/depth in all three of the positions - I can't remember that ever happening before. pretty much any permutation is strong - and leaves last season's midfield in the dust.

#6 : Endo, Macca, Bajcetic

LM : Macca, Jones, Gravy

RM : Szobo, Macca

And that's not even counting more depth when desperate (or for Subs) in Elliott, McDonnell and Clark. Pity Thiago died.

I love his pressing, he seems be brilliant at it. He is compact, with short intense bursts. Klopp's future pressing coach?

I know at LFC, we like to write our own scripts and have been a part of some unbelievable journeys. But Ibiza Schmadtke, delivering a 30-year-old Endo with no experience at "top" clubs and laying the foundation for a quad assault. I did not see that one coming.

He was absolutely everywhere today. And smart with the ball too. Brilliant performance.
