Benayoun says £6m Chelsea move is likely

By Harry Harris, Football Correspondent

May 24, 2010

Liverpool midfielder Yossi Benayoun has caused a combination of outrage and shock on Merseyside by an apparent public declaration that he wants to quit Anfield for Stamford Bridge.

Benayoun is quoted in the Daily Mail as saying: "Ancelotti wants me for next season and now everything depends on Liverpool. Chelsea will have to pay some £6 million but I believe that in the end I'll be moving there."

That has sparked a combustible reaction in the Red half of Merseyside, with Liverpool fans confused whether the comment is factual or not and totally surprised by it.

Soccernet last week broke the news that Chelsea were considering a move for the Israeli captain. That, too, provoked disbelief.

But a source close to the 30-year-old midfielder told Soccernet at the time: "Nobody has spoken to me about interest from Chelsea, but it wouldn't surprise me.

"As for whether Yossi would want to go, he is the type of player who wants to play every game. When he is left out of the team, he wants to go, when he is in the team, he wants to stay. He keeps changing his mind as he has been in and out of the team all season."

Much of the surprise from Liverpool fans is due to the fact Carlo Ancelotti has expressed the desire to lower the average age of his Chelsea side and bring through younger players.

Yet Benayoun is 30, which flies in the face of that declared policy and gives credence to the suspicion that it cannot be true.

But there is continued uncertainty about the future of Joe Cole who is out of contract and available on a free transfer, as his contract talks have stalled.

Javier Mascherano is also on Chelsea's radar as Michael Ballack is nearing the end of his Stamford Bridge career, and Ancelotti is in need of an experienced midfield anchor man.

The big catch at Anfield, though, is Fernando Torres, and it is now widely accepted that the Spanish striker is top of Roman Abramovich's wanted list, and an initial £50 million plus player exchange offer is not far away.

There could be some fascinating exchanges of players between Anfield and the Bridge this summer, and the middle men are working away feverishly to see if it can happen.

Wow

Would have been nice to get more money as he signed a new deal last summer. He must be Cole's replacement.

Player exchange? How much is Cole worth?

If one of Yossi's issues is not getting enough games here, than as was said in the article, a move to Chelsea is a no brainer, it could then be he is the make weight in a deal.

regards

Yossi is a squad player. Nothing more. Can't believe he'd get more game time for Chelsea.

He might have been under Rafa but I think he deserves more games and minutes (and should be rotated more with Kuyt).

He's worth a lot more than 6m in my book and is the type of player we need to keep hold of.

Cole's out of contract Vlad.

We don't have many goal scoring players in the team, so I think it would be a mistake letting him go.
But if he is being a disruptive influence then I guess we would have to consider it.

*what goes through the mind of yossi on one of his patented 'mazey runs' (C) (TM)*

'here I go, goes past one, yay! oh look, there's someone in space, should I pass? naw...'

'keep going yossi, goes past two, hooray! hey, there three people in space, should I pass? naw...'

'nearly there yossi, almost within shooting range, yippee! WOW there are FIVE liverpool players queuing up inside the box, should I pass? naw, there's just ONE defender to beat (again) and I'll score for sure'

'ohh, I've lost it...'

seriously, who gives a fuck? as long as we get a good fee, who cares?

'meh'

I'm surprised you say that.

He's often been one of our best attacking threats after Torres and Gerrard.

6m is a paltry sum for his obvious talent.

All Alonso does is pass...

All Yossi does is score goals and provide assists despite being shunted around various positions and played as a squaddie...

MEH!

Meanwhile... WHY IS LUCAS AND THAT SHITHOUSE EL ZHAR STARTING, THE CUNTS!

he's a squad player nothing more nothing less, and before you bring up babel I wrote him off ages ago.
the only pity is we'll earn little for the deal as he (yossi) is 30.
if we want to really push for the elite we have to address the mediocrity on the wings and this has been the case for years. for the record valencia didn't score as much as yossi but I'd swap the two in an instant.

We're hardly overflowing with creative attacking players Neil.

I give a fuck.
well, I can see why you would (give a fuck) because yossi is one of our better creative players and that is our problem right there. yossi is going to go to chelsea and will be the bottom of the pile (probably warming the bench most games) but at liverpool his is one of the main attacking threats. in an ideal world I'd want him to stay (on the bench) with someone far better than him in the first team and I think we can find that player, who is quick, skillful can create chances and above all knows when to release the ball.

yossi wants out, I'm not going to shed any tears for him because I know we can do better.

Quite bizarre Spider, even from you!

And we could have Messi in our squad, but he isn't going to do jack shit sitting on the bench most of the time.

He's another one who's been treated pretty badly.

He's 30 and is hardly likely to improve. If Rafa isn't going to start him or insists on playing him on the left, i can see why he wants to go, and if we got something nearer £8M, i'd take it without a seconds thought.

in a nut shell.
where is yossi going to play?
the left? well he's not very effective there.
the right? wherefore kuyt?
in the hole? what about gerrard?

Fuck me, I'd be well pissed off if Yossi went to Chelsea.

We have only three players capable of changing a game through attack or creativity. Yossi is one of them.

To let him go when you consider us scoring goals is our biggest problem would be stupid. To sell him to a Premiership rival would be insane.

At 30, he might not improve but I'd argue he's in his prime right now, as many creative types flourish in their thirties. He doesn't rely on pace and has matured into a very good player despite not getting a run of games for some time now.

He'd be good for another 4/5 years yet.

If we replaced him with Cole and used the cash to part fund someone else i'd be happy.

yossi obviously wants out, so that leaves us with the choice of who to sell him to. who is going to come for yossi from abroad?

He provides a goal threat from the bench for anyone. I dont doubt he'd be a bit part player there, but we have a massive lack of creativity so to let him go seems mad to me.

the reason they want yossi, is they (chelsea) aren't confident of securing j cole, so want to replace one creative bench player with another.

Is this perhaps a clue that Rafa wont be here next season? i always thought flossy was one of his favourites to be honest?
naw, he has been in and out of the team also appearing on the left, where frankly he's rubbish.

When Gerrard or Torres are out of the team, who do we rely on for a genuine bit of creativity?

Masha - no
Lucas - enough said
Kuyt - no
Babel - no

I can only think of only Johnson and Aqua (when he plays).
