The bottom line is an 'out of form' Alonso is still better than 95% of Premiership midfielders.

He was never shit, just not reaching the extremely high standards he demonstrated from day one in his Liverpool career.

But as Macca says, fuck it and move on. Aquilani is highly talented and will improve our midfield no end.

Because it's garbage. Mascher gave the lie to it as recently as the Chelsea game.

Nonsense. The fact that our current central midfield has problems isn't remotely relevant to the question of Alonso's form during those two seasons, when he was given every chance to play his way back into form and, not least by his own previous standards, clearly failed to do so.

I can't be bothered to argue / debate this point any more.

You're wrong. I don't care if you or anyone else doesn't see that.

Hah, exactly how I feel!

Yes, if he gets to play that is. I have big doubts about his ability to stay fit such is his history for injuries!

We miss Xabi's partnership with Mascher.

If we had sold Mascher last Summer instead, we've been left with Lucas and Xabi, probably one of the least mobile central midfield partnerships ever. I'm not sure if I would prefer that to what we have now.

I'd take that all day, every day of the week. It's much easier to replace a DM than someone like Xabi.

Maybe, maybe not. There aren't many better DMs than Mascher and bringing in another DM wouldn't have solved the problem that Xabi plus a DM lacks a goal threat.

Both Xabi and Mascher are the best at what they specialize in and as CM partnerships goes, it was great and they complimented each other perfectly, but a lack of goals put more pressure on our widemen to score.

If, as it seems, Mascher is going next Summer, I hope we can bring in a talented midfielder that's more multi-faceted to compliment Aqualini.

It's a club for poltroons. Look at all the team pics - they can't kneel because they don't want to dirty their white kit, the great jessies!

Some of those players have moved on but Real Madrid still remains a mecca for the assholes of world football.

You know what, I lied when I said the Mascher and Xabi partnership was great. It wasn't great, it was much better than that and was the foundation of our great team of last season.

It's a shame the Americans and Rafa flogged a part of that foundation to pay back our debts but it's done now and we should try to look forward.

Sell Masher and play Lucas with 'no discernible difference?'

We seem quite lucky sometimes with Rafa's targets.

Quaresma and Simao spring to mind of another two who we were lucky to dodge.

I don't agree that the delay in the deal was because of Alonso.

Two parties are involved in the negotiations, Liverpool and Madrid. The deal could have been done regardless of whether Xabi handed in a transfer request or not.

The news broke very early about Xabi to be sold last summer, the reason he wasn't sold quickly was because we hadn't been offered what we wanted for him.

To be fair, Rafa apparently met with Quaresma and decided he didn't have the right mentality, so he made a good call. Simao is a much better player, and I'm not sure whether he wouldn't improve our team.

I wasn't having a dig at Rafa but just pointing out we were lucky to miss out on them IMO.

I was under the impression that Simao was rather inconsistent.

No he isn't.

When he was out of form, got caught in possession time and time again, passed it sideways and backwards, stood next to Hyypia, had very minimal impact in the game he was involved in.

That was part of it, but Rafa stated publicly that Alonso would have to formally ask for a move. Maybe doing so was a device to try and keep pressure on the player to stay after all but, whatever the reason, Rafa could not have made the position clearer.

His performance bought him down to a point where he could be considered replaceable, but your assessment is complete crap, and one shared by too many.

hmmm, not sure that you and I agree on this Vlad but I do disagree with JJ.

I'm surprised people are leaping on Alonso's back - the one who everyone admitted was treated so shamefully the previous season. There is a way to sell a player and to do so professionally without burning your bridges; Rafa didn't choose that way when he attempted to off load his first signing during the summer in 08.

We've all commented to varying degrees as to whether he should have been sold (with Barry heavily in the picture) and we all commented on the lack of courtesy and professionalism in which it was attempted. We all managed to point out during the season that the episode had clearly shaken Alonso and his effort was there for all to see during the season. For some reason it seems that everyone thinks that should just be the end of it.

"Yes Xabi, you were treated with utter contempt and a total lack of professionalism. Yes, the only reason we couldn't get rid of you was because no one would pay the money we were trying to demand. Yes, that helped us during the season cause you played your socks off. No, we don't think that gives you any right to be pissed off with the manager - you should continue to demonstrate absolute loyalty to the club and the manager even thought that loyalty is not reciprocated. No, we don't understand why you should have a problem with that."

The reality is that Gerrard nearly went because of a much lesser show of professionalism and loyalty from the club but we apparently didn't learn a thing from that episode, treated a player like dirt and then apparently did nothing to address the obvious issues until it was too late. But, hey, easy solution is to blame Alonso for being a dirty, conniving, manipulative rat who did the dirty on a club that has been clearly beyond reproach in all its dealings. :🙂

Is one of the best Xabi posts I've read.

And it feels as if I've read millions.
