And why didn't they let him write a letter to the fans?

That's so out of order.

They knew what kind of impact it could have had on you.

I think Glock has a point too about he graciousness to Benitez, he could be his next boss
I think Glock has a point as well, and if I remember the old testament correctly we now have this to look forward to -

Fire and brimstone coming down from the skies! Rivers and seas boiling!
Forty years of darkness! Earthquakes, volcanoes...
The dead rising from the grave!
Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together... mass hysteria!

Yes, I have to hand it* to Glock: he used the words 'and' 'but' and 'the' quite correctly the other day. Some of you are far too harsh on him.

Thank god we haven't got this talented bastard in our team now what with his 7 out of 5 years of bad form while he was with us, I much prefer having 2 central midfielders with no discernable attacking talent at all in the middle, so glad we got rid, Rafa played a blinder, I only wish we had flogged him off to Turkey the year before and got the incredible talent that is Gareth Barry.

Oh and how dare he say nice things about us, fuck off Xabi

+1.

Top class Xabi top class.

Top class ? Top class ? The cunt walked out on us. I don't care what bleating commentary Alonso says about Liverpool. He's the one who fucked off so don't pretend you give two fucks about the club please Xabi. Thanks for playing well for three seasons out of the five you were here - when you could be arsed turning up for games- but that's just history now.

Posts like this (Sunny's post) really wind me up, but I just can't be bothered to get drawn into the same old debate again.

Wow so you really don't like him now?

I think alot of other players like Pennant could take an easy swipe at us but Xabi refuses too.

I admire that.

And the season before what happened??? From what I can remember the club tried its best to get rid of him. Forgive him for not feeling wanted, and with a club like Real coming in who had just signed the 2 best players in the world coming in for him and making him feel wanted.

Nobody ever remembers clubs showing disloyalty, but when a player shows it you're likely to see a lot of fickle fans make their voices known!
Yes it ******* well is an issue. The preparations to replace him could have started in May if he'd been clear about his decision then, nor would the fee have had to be reduced if Alonso avoided publicity at that stage. As it was, unless and until Alonso actually came out and said he wanted away, Rafa was never going to get the Aquilani money authorised by H and G.
I would've assumed that preparations to replace him were started in May?
The problem is that his replacement is a crock who's only started playing recently and will take a while to get up his match fitness.
What difference would it have made if we'd signed Aquilani a month earlier?

Also, wasn't there something about having to pay Sociedad part of the fee if he was sold before a certain date? How true was that?

One thing that seems like a 'dig' at the club/Rafa is him saying he wasn't allowed to publish an open letter. If he really wanted to, there are places, other that the offical site, that he could've published/said something.
He didn't say anything to the fans other that to say that he wasn't allowed to say anything to the fans. 😛

Completion of an actual transfer depended on Alonso coming out and formally asking for it. I'm sure Rafa and others within the club were thinking about life after Alonso, but thinking was as far as they could go - the player's delay in putting in a transfer request stymied everything else until very late in the day. I don't know if there's any truth in some claims which were made, at the time and later, that we lost out on other possible deals as a result of that delay (and the delays in the negotiations, which I accept weren't down to Alonso), but it might explain why we ended up buying an injured player. I thought at the time that Alonso's shilly-shallying was essentially a dig at Rafa, so I agree with you now about the likely reason for this artificial fuss regarding permission for an "open letter".

True, the Aquilani deal was set in stone as we knew Alonso would be leaving. Sure he signed for us within 2 days of Alonso leaving, so that's a lot of shit of making an issue out of that.

We're talking about a player that Benitez had already decided 12 months previous that he could do without. So it should have been no great shakes. Or, was he wrong? Mmm.....

A lot of us agreed with Rafa when he came to that initial conclusion about Alonso, who had had two not exactly bad but certainly very average seasons one after the other. The player then pulled his socks up last season and reminded everyone why he was Rafa's own first signing after joining us, in response to which Rafa changed his mind (something he's been criticised, rightly IMO, for not doing often enough) and tried to keep him. Nothing there to slate Rafa for, unless you're determined to blame him regardless.

I don't agree with the notion that we were right to want rid after two "average" seasons.

We're now seeing what average really is. I don't recall our midfield ever getting bypassed game after game after game whilst Alonso was supposedly average or shit or whatever people labelled him as.

So, the many that agreed with him were all horribly wrong. Rosco, Anita, myself and the other Alonso advocates were all right.

It's getting a bit like the Catholic grave with the picture of the deceased. Should you choose a picture of the man in his prime or in later life or just on a really bad day? If you have a fixed memory of Alonso at his best, as Larry now seems to have, then the point he makes seems valid. If, on the other hand, you don't have a memory of Alonso being consistent throughout the past two seasons, it's different.

Nonsense. The fact that our current central midfield has problems isn't remotely relevant to the question of Alonso's form during those two seasons, when he was given every chance to play his way back into form and, not least by his own previous standards, clearly failed to do so.

I agree. We've gone from 'Best Midfield in the World' TM to really medicore in the space of 2 to 3 seasons. God Almighty, I'd welcome Sissoko back.
Alonso was never average. Unfortunately, watching some of the players we have now scrambling to perform the same role proves that.

I remember you once saying you'd been told you were rather high-handed. This kind of supercilious guff shows why.

No, he isn't. He'd have had a point if Rafa had rushed to get rid of Alonso as soon as his form first began to dip, but that didn't happen. On the contrary, after two whole seasons one could equally well ask why Rafa didn't act sooner, especially given Alonso's return to form when he found out he WAS dispensible after all.

I don't think Maschareno has been playing consistently to his best over the last 12 months. I'd actually go as far as to say he's been average... shit even!

We should sell the stroppy cunt and play Lucas in his stead. There will be no noticeable difference really. The only thing we should really be questioning is why Rafa hasn't already decided to act on this.

The match we lost? that we won with a Xabi winner the year before...kidding

Masher only turns up for the big games for me, he's fuck all use against weaker opposition when we need to dictate the play ...unless he has an Alonso type beside him
