WWWDWDWWLD is our results in the league since losing to Portsmouth in december.
That is 10 games played, 6 wins, 3 draws, 1 loss.
If God approached you after the Pompey game and said "There, there, I'll let you get 21 of the next 30 points - or you can take your chances", would you take it?
If yes, then why the sad face?
Now no one can argue the fact that we have played some ugly negative football since then, but ultimately all I care about is getting good results.
And to me getting 21 out of 30 points is acceptable. If we can keep our current form going we will almost certainly get 4th.

I guess my point is that things are not as bad as this forum thinks.
With Torres, Benayoun and Johnson all coming back, we can afford to be optimistic.
Cheer up lads, sky isnt falling.

No no no, we're fucking shit, have a team full of slow, plodding cunts, and Rafa can fuck off - the Cunt.

We've addressed the difficulties with a back to basics approach, and we do have some quality returning to the team.

Those hardly are reasons for enthusiasm though, given where we were last season, and it's still up in the air as to whether we'll make fourth. There's just as much evidence that we'll fall apart again as there is that we'll suddenly click into a gear we've really never found this entire season.

Plus, it's not that inspiring merely watching the sky not fall for 90 minutes as we barely craft anything.

ha ha when it put like that it looks quite impressive.

talking about pompy if they go into administration are the points people have aquired against them removed? if so we'll remain were we are whilst teams rounds us will have points deducted, ha ha.

I'm not sure Johnson coming back in at right back is necessarily a good thing. We've tightened up the defence by playing Carragher there, there's every chance that swapping Johnson back in for him will result in us conceding a few more.

We are not pretty to watch at the moment, so if that is your main concern I understand if you are not enthusiastic.
Resultswise though we dont have much to complain about post-Pompey.
Just look at the 10 games we played up to and including the Pompey game:
LWLDDWDLWL
10 games, 3 wins, 3 draws, 4 losses.
Now THAT is fucking dire.

As you said, it has been back to basics since, and we have been very hard to beat.
One loss, away to Arsenal, in 10 games isnt bad. In fact it is good.

Dont get me wrong, this season as a whole has been a complete disaster.
But I think we can allow ourselves to pleased with a return to some kind of form.
And I definitely dont agree that we are just as likely to implode as we are to continue getting results.

you're as cautious as our manager 😉

With good reason I think Spidey. Playing attacking fullbacks has ruined the balance of the side and it's only really since Johnson has been injured that we've managed to get some stability at the back.

I dont think conceding too many goals is our biggest concern.
This shows goals scored and conceded so far this season:
Chelsea 63 22
Man U 63 24
Arsenal 63 30
Liverpool 43 27

We have conceded 5 more than Chelsea, and 3 less than Arsenal. Big deal.
However we have scored 20 goals less than all of them. 20!!!
Having Johnson, Torres and Benayoun back will do us a world of good.

(btw kinda odd that the top 3 have all scored the exact same number of goals)

The question was, "why the sad face?" Unfortunately, part of the premise is "the sky isn't falling, we're just grinding ugly results in a battle for fourth."

johnson is a bette fullback than carra, carra is a better center back than fullback.

I think the second johnson is fit he will return to the side. technically you could move johnson to right midfield movie kuyt besides torres, move gerrard besides masher and yossi to left midfield there by including all of liverpool's best players.

We're going to continue playing a midfield of Lucas and Mascherano, so we're going to be shite going forward so that's why it's important for us to stay tight at the back.

27 goals conceded is same amount of goals that we conceded in the whole of last season.

That very much depends on how you judge a full back.

If my counting is correct -we've won 7 games of the 17 that Johnson has played. We've won 8 of the 10 he's missed.

I'll go with the one that didn't beg not to play there anymore last season because they know the limits of their conditioning.

There's no question which the better defender is, obviously.

Johnson will be very useful when we are controlling play and going forward, but it might have to wait until next season at this rate.

I'll always want a fullback that can provide an attacking threat and width especially when the wide midfielder seem incapable of doing so.

Clearly everyone is conceding more goals and dropping more points than last season, as the league as a whole has been getting more even.
Yes our midfield is sorely lacking in creativity and goalscorers.
Not playing Johnson isnt going to fix that.
Also you seem to forget that our other defenders were just as much to blame for our bad run before christmas.

I think we all know that at this stage Spidey.

I prefer the simple approach, put players who can defend in the defence and players who can attack in the attack. Not exactly revolutionary, but it works.

we have two holding midfielders that should be covering the gaps he (johnson) leaves, its not as if they are occupying the opposition final third making it diffiuclt for them to track back, is it?

chelsea who are top of the league utilise attacking fullbacks to provide width in their diamond formation, a formation not too dissimilar to ours.

And because Skrtel has found his form from last season.

And because Agger has returned from injury.

And because Kyrigiakos found his feet in the Premiership.

And because our luck changed and not every shot actually went in.

And because Carra found his feet and got back into form.

It's not just about Johnson. We need him in our side, cause Carra isn't a fullback. We look hopeless going forward at times, and with our slow wingers an attacking full back is exactly what we need. I don't believe for one second that we'll suddenly ship goals just because he returns.

By that reasoning Aquilani is the best midfielder ever, as we have won every game he has started.
In those 17 games Johnson played there were 10 other players on the pitch to share the blame.
You make it sound like Carra, Skrtel and Insua have all had such a great season - if only Johnson hadnt been there to spoil the party!

Johnson is one of our best players, and I expect him to have very bright future with us.

Would you shift Johnson to RM and then Kuyt up front with Torres then? Straight 442 with Gerrard and Mascherano in the middle with Riera/Aurelio/Babel for the left and Johnson/Maxi/Benayoun on the right. Plus several of those players can play other roles as necessary (Benayoun as 2nd/3rd striker).

I would. Gives us more balance and we have the ability to adapt / be flexible according to the game situation - ie push Gerrard up behind front two and leave Mascherano holding if we need to chase a game.

This one up front lark gives me nightmares.

An avid one.

But surely there would be more pressing matters you would want to talk to him about?!?!?

1) What happens when we die?
2) How was the universe created and what does the future hold for the planet?
3) Does the posting of pictures of disabled children (even with a NSFW tag) on an internet forum have a bearing on my soul's ultimate destiny?
4) What do you shave your beard with?

Then I'd get round to football I think.

Who cares?

We're sixth, out of every major trophy and whatever happens between now and the end of the season, it's been a fucking disaster and Benitez deserves the sack.
