World Cup Summary Thread....

I thoroughly enjoyed the tournament. The most impressive feature for me, was the triumph of team over individuals and long may it remain so. It is after all, a team game. We have worthy winners who play good football, its a shame that the true final was played last week (Germany v Spain).

I also enjoyed the African flavour which gave unique noise and colour to the proceedings, in the end no one spoke of the vuvuzelas. I suppose people eventually got used to it. The ball was kack. When I saw the likes of Gerrard and Alonso shooting hopelessly wide, I knew the football wasn't up to it and that's a shame.

Roll on 2014 in Brazil.

Good article that.

And my observation about it moving like a sock filled with wet sand wasn't miles away! It's the lack of spin that seemed so odd, and the trajectory changes.

The slo-mos illustrated that perfectly. It was like the ball was weighted at the bottom, it hardly rotated even when struck with power.

I watched most games and really enjoyed the tournament despite the fact the standard was not great (only one world class team - Spain) and despite the Jabulani ball which was very obviously responsible for some shocking ball-control and shooting issues.

I loved watching the Germans, Uruguay and Spain, and I enjoyed the demise of the French & Italians. The best games were Slovakia 3-2 Italy, Germany 4-0 Argentina, Netherlands 2-1 Brazil and the best players were Sneijder, Villa, Forlan, Lucio, Juan, Puyol and Muller.

It was certainly a better tournament than USA '94 and Germany '06.

Really? I think it's fucking ugly, and it's not close to the European cup. It looks like crumpled up tin foil around a grapefruit painted gold.

I think big ears looks boring in comparison.
is the world cup solid gold or gold plated?

There you go Neil,

I never knew Nike was the Greek Goddess of Victory, until two minutes ago

The World Cup is a gold trophy that is awarded to the winners of the FIFA World Cup. Since the advent of the World Cup in 1930, two trophies have represented victory: the Jules Rimet Trophy from 1930 to 1970, and the FIFA World Cup Trophy from 1974 to the present day.

The trophy, originally named Victory, but later renamed in honour of former FIFA president Jules Rimet, was made of gold plated sterling silver and lapis lazuli and depicted Nike, the Greek goddess of victory. Brazil won the trophy outright in 1970, prompting the commissioning of a replacement. The Jules Rimet Trophy was stolen in 1983 and never recovered. The replacement trophy, the FIFA World Cup Trophy, was first used in 1974. Made of 18 carat gold with a malachite base, it depicts two human figures holding up the Earth. The current holder of the trophy is Spain, winner of the 2010 World Cup.

cheers man :O)

And I'd like to be the first to point out that Spain weren't that good either

Opening game defeat, hardly any goals scored, soporific at times, and only reached greatness *once* in the entire tournament (vs Germany)

They won because nobody else was any fucking good

The likening of the ball's movement to a cheapo plastic ball makes even more sense in light of Craig's scientific mumbo-jumbo.
