World Cup of the Damned

WTF was that from Lewandowski. Awful penalty taking technique. Lucky to get a retake.

I fucking hate dicks who do that. This is why keepers should be allowed off their line the moment the taker comes within 30 cm* of the ball.

(* that's 1 foot for u old ppl)

Bukayo Saka is expected to start for England against Senegal in Sunday's World Cup last-16 clash, Sky Sports News has learned. "Despite all the talk of an unchanged line-up, Saka is set to start. So one of Phil Foden or Marcus Rashford is expected to miss out. "The fact Saka was rested in the last game, perhaps means this was always planned.
Expect Jack Grealish to remain as England's super-sub, and so it's a question of 'which two from four', with persuasive arguments possible for each of Rashford, Foden, Sterling and Saka.

The back four is likely to be the same, though it's a toss-up between Kyle Walker and Kieran Trippier at right-back. Walker could well win that battle - his exceptional pace is a characteristic that Southgate has always valued, though without Trippier in the team, England lose some expertise with set pieces.

Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham are certain picks in the midfield, and Jordan Henderson could well get the nod ahead of Mason Mount, because of his extra experience and stabilising presence.

Saka absolutely should play after his display in the opener. I'd put him right and Rashford left. They've looked in the best form of the four so far.

England's starting front line is :

Foden ........ Kane ....... Saka

Foden himself prefers to play centrally but of course Southgate persists in playing him wide, the usual British manager's response to a talent they think they can't leave out but don't really know what to do with.

Well to be fair Guardiola also plays him on the Left (or sometimes Right), ahead of previously Sterling and now Grealish. We'll lose some width but I guess Shaw will be asked to fit that space.

Foden is good but, for someone who's previously insisted that he'd pick players on current form, Southgate still abandons that principle at the drop of a hat.

First point: true, but that's because Guardiola's got a squad packed with worldies he has to keep happy and fully firing.

Second point: true again and he's OK at doing it, but starting out there is Rashford's best position and (regrettably) he looks back on form now.

Well to be fair to Foden, he isn't on form because he's barely played part two months. But when he plays, he (generally) scores. It isn't crazy to play him.

No, it isn't, but it is inconsistent with what Southgate had previously said (rightly IMO as it happens) he was going to do. I just hope we don't regret it.

Difficult, difficult, lemon difficult.

Does my will to see Henderson win the world cup and have the most impressive collection of medals override a general dislike for the English football team?

From the first 15 minutes, it looks like England will have too much. But with Harry Maguire and his Ironclad Head, there's always a chance of a fuck up.

Handball! Penalty! Where's the var?

Probably would have been given if it was the argies playing.

English midfield is pressing well, via Henderson when Senegal have the ball in their own half. Problem is, Senegal are only getting the ball from defensive fuck ups. And they are mostly happening because the English defence doesn't have a ball into midfield.

Maguire and stones look like they met the rest of the team in the car park before the match
That's like the time my brother played for the pub team, one match the other pub team arrived short two players so my bro and another guy joined their team so the match could go ahead.

He managed to bag himself a brace for the other team...
