No they don't. Spain being the obvious fucking example.
Real and Barca are far more important, and take up the majority of the media's time. They can hardly sell out 15,000 seater stadia for the national team. Spain is massively divided and the people identify with where they are from Valencia, Madrid, Catalonia etc than "Spain"

Not strictly true Brendan although there are very strong regional identities in Spain there are fucking loads of Spaniards very excited about the upcoming Mundial.... They don't have any words to their anthem but there is plenty of patriotism here even among the catalans.
Mind you it's easy to buy into the national team emotionally for the Spanish as they are fucking magic to watch and will be one the teams to beat. Everybody loves a winner.
As for the original question I have no problem at all saying i'm patriotic and want England to do well and i will be excited if we play well and progress in the tournament, maybe it's because i live abroad and that makes you more patriotic .... i dont know.... England is a fucking lovely place in many ways.
Having said that the aggresive goons and drunken cunts who give shit to everyone spouting nasty bile and getting in fights, Fuck that i'd rather watch it out here in Spain.
The last world cup here was really fun though, the local bar filled with people from all competing teams and some of the banter was really good.
I remember the England Sweden game was really great with half the bar in Yellow and the other half in white both sides singing funny mocking songs at each other, where they could stick their IKEA flatpacks etc... the swedish riposte was excellent but i cant remember what it was now... perhaps because it was in Spain it was all really good natured and nobody took it to far and shit loads of beer was drunk and both sets of fans got on well and had a laugh.... in England some cunt would have started something i'm sure.
I love my country, it was very good to me, and i suppose i am in fact very "English" but the tatooed violent dickheads do actually spoil it for people... I hope one day they pack it in and grow up a little bit so we can all enjoy it.
