Roy Hodgson will make Brede Hangeland his first transfer target when, as expected, he takes over as Liverpool manager tomorrow. Liverpool have earmarked the Norway defender to partner Martin Skrtel next season with Jamie Carragher, 32, operating as experienced cover. The deal would need to be funded by player sales.

Hangeland, 29 last week, signed a contract until 2013 after Arsenal had balked at Fulham’s “excessive†valuation.

Who knows mate. As JJ said no-one stood out really. And as you say Agger staying fit is an ask in itself. As is Torres. As is Gerrard.

Indeed. Neither Agger nor Skrtel stood out to me as playing better than Carra over last season as a whole.

It's absolutely certain that Agger, if he stays fit, is occupying one of the spots.

It's Agger plus one as I see it.

So it's Agger out then?

That would be, well, plain lunacy.

That's just lazy journalism then.

Unless of course he knows that Roy would opt for Skrtel ahead of Agger which I very much doubt.

*I hate that site btw... ruinkhlsday.com that is...

Yeah thats true. I just like the idea of a Hangeland/Agger partnership, it looks to me to have the makings of a very useful CD partnership.

I just hope that Roy comes in and is not afraid to make difficult decisions. Whoever is left in the squad come the start of the season should begin with a fresh slate, and earn the right to play via form alone.

I like the idea of that partnership too Rafa. All I'm saying is nothing is guaranteed based on last years performances and Agger certainly isn't a shoe in especially if Gerrard leaves as Carra may become captain. You need your captain on the pitch.

Agger's captain material.

Anyways I'm not going into this debate - anyone in their right mind would keep Agger in our starting XI and yes he wasn't at his best last year and almost quit his football because of the severe back-aches but after the operation it's gone from good to better. Which was evident at the World Cup if nothing else.

Agger is one for now and the future and should be regarded in the same way as Reina, Johnson, Gerrard, Masher and Torres in the team.

Undropable if it.

Case closed.

Hahaha. Case closed. Your Danish bias is clouding your judgement. You said it yourself - he wasn't great last year and he wasn't fit either. Don't get me wrong, I like Agger and think he, if playing like he can, should be in there. I'm just saying there's no guarantees and it's far from case closed.

He's in no way captain material though. Yet

Case closed was tongue-in-cheek-like mate.

Anyways I think he's one of six undropable players when fit and I even reckon him to be ready to take over the captaincy if called upon. He's a leader in his own way, love the club and the city, not affraid to commit himself for the future (as one of very few at this point) and a very very good and respected player too.

What more do you want of your captain?

I know it was tongue in cheek mate. That's why I laughed. :s I want my captain to give the rest of the team the kick up the arse they need when on the field. Agger doesn't seem vocal enough for that. I do like him as a player. Nobody is undroppable. Or irreplaceable. But thats another conversation
If Stevie goes, and Carra is in and out, then Pepe should be captain IMO
Harsh on Jamie, but that's right.

If Hangeland did come in then we have to replace one of our CB's, and it should probably be Skrtel.

He might also be planning to play Carragher at RB and Johnson RM. I wouldn't be against trying the idea
Yes Pepes a shout deffo.
He really is but I've never been that much into giving captaincies to keepers. Ther are often to far a way from the action to be proper involved.

I take Sunny's point about nobody being undroppable, but IMO a captain has to be as close to that as it's possible to get. Sorry but Agger wasn't there last season, in terms of either fitness or performance.

Additionally a player has to have one of two things to be suitable for captaincy IMO. Either he has to have seniority within the squad or he has to have the strength of personality which usually comes with experience, even if he's not that old. Agger doesn't have the first and at this stage I'm not satisfied he has the second. He could certainly get there, but for me he hasn't yet.

Incidentally I would not play Carra at RB except in dire emergency. He doesn't want to play there and it's a position where he's more likely to get found out as he gets older.

Don't know about that mate. Whenever there's a teammate in trouble Agger's always the first one in there giving his vocal and physical back-up it seems.

And boy did he shout a lot at Insua last Season too...

Maybe he's too young and maybe I'm expecting a bit to much but I'm positive he'd be up for the task.

Carra or Gerrard will wear it for as long as they play though so hopefully we don't need this discussion for at least a couple of Seasons more.

Don't forget we've got a greek centre-back too - and Martin Kelly.
True, though I'd hazard a guess that Kelly will be needed at fullback first and foremost.
Play him on the left side instead of that piece of Argentinian lard.

It will be refreshing to watch Roy sort out Rafa's blind spots. Hopefully we won't see much of Insua and the central midfield pairing of Mascherano and Lucas.

Well, Masher is leaving, so that's one less problem to worry about.

Johnson - Carra - Hangeland - Agger can prove to be a very useful back four with enough defensive cover when Johnson goes bombing forward.

If he didn't shout at Insua, there'd be something wrong with him.

Imagine the reaction in this forum if Rafa is to sign another centerback this season, although I do agree that hangeland will be a good signing.

I like him, but I think he'll be over-priced - having just signed a new contract- and a non-necessity purchase.

A bit like Johnson really.

We've got other gaping positions which have to be addressed.

I would rate our Fulham wish list like this:

1. Hangeland

-Quality center half probably better than Skittles, would pair nicely with Dagger IMO.

2. Konchesky

Has always impressed me, younger than you might think (29), been a solid premier league player for ages. Delivers a nice cross and is better than anything we have had at left back for some time.

3. Dempsey

Good player, just not sure what role he would play for us other than out left and I would rather we had someone out there to provide width. Clint likes to cut in and make plays in the middle of the pitch.

4. Murphy

Would welcome him back but he is getting long in the tooth.

5. Zamora

Meh.
