Where do we go from here?

I honestly don't see next season being an easy reset. You have to consider the knock on effect of our form and where we are at, this is the bit where big European sides think they can pick off our best players and this is where we find out who is with us for the long haul and who isn't.

We're also banking on VVD coming back as the same player, it's a bad injury, it takes a long time to get going again.

Maybe I'm just being pessimistic because this season is so fucked, but everything has gone wrong. Best player in the team injured, we apparently bought one of the best players in the World and he doesn't look an easy fit, Gomez is a worry, Trent's defending is a worry, Firmino's form is a worry (despite a bit of magic today), we've bought two cheap defenders who we know very little about and by todays showing Kabak will take time we don't have to get to grips with the team and the league.

Defeat against the blueshite really would be the nail in the coffin and I can't see us in current form winning that one either. Potentially 16pts off City, with no doubt more dropped points to come.

Happy fucking 2021.

It feels very Liverpool to finally win the league, not be able to celebrate probably and then our season to be fucked by Everton crippling our most important player.

I'm not sure where we go.

I've been down about this team... extremely frustrated with var (blue moon like rants I know), injury luck and klopp decisions.

However, if klopp stays, and even if we dont finish 4th, I think we can compete next year.

Reasons:
1) 3 CBs and a new purchase
2) will allow hendo and fab to be in the middle
3) will afford trent the protection he needs to excel
4) we will sign 2-3 new midfielders and move out ox (love him but he cannot recover his form pre Roma when he cannot play) and others
5) jota to push the front 3, if not replace bobby, and another purchase to further reignite these players
6) most importantly, an angry & motivated klopp ... he will want to shut a lot of people up ...

I think you are greatly overestimating how many players we will sign. And it might be a double overestimation if we miss out on CL football.

Another problem is that Covid has scuppered a lot of clubs budgets. We wont get as much money as we'd like for any of our players.

Most of our bench options I'd prefer never to see again. And some of our starters need to be relegated to the bench or at least have their positions under challenge.

I was thinking a few years back - if we could just win the league once I would accept relegation the next year, and still be happy. I'm not happy, but this is better than my hypothetical deal.
Where I have a problem is that I don't like the modern game - VAR is so damaging to enjoyment. I miss the "working-class man's" game I grew up with.
Klopp made things better - when he has had enough I expect I'll follow suit.

I think we will come good next season if no big players leave. We have had a ridiculous list of injuries this season including all 3 senior centre backs. That's had a massive knock on effect to the midfield. We were excellent until Christmas (apart from weird Villa game). For the rest of the season, try bed in centre backs and get at least one of Fab or Henderson into midfield and try make top 4 and have a go at the Champions League

The best place to start from here (no particular order) is:

1 stop unforced errors.
2 get Henderson back in midfield.
3 get injured players back to improve options.
4 stop whining about VAR.

One of salah and mane if not both will go, then we will use that money to buy some folks. If they are like salah or mane in terms of value, klopp will leave us on good footing. If they are like ox or keita, then it'll take a lot longer, and klopp will be an incredibly hard act to follow.

It makes you wonder if Klopp will see this as the time to make big changes, either in personnel, formation or playing style. The core players in the squad aren't getting any younger and if FSG's strategy of selling players before they lose their value continues then we could see a big name or two leaving. This might give Jurgen some cash to spend on new blood.
Which players that might be would depend on sizeable bids from other big clubs and the clubs confidence in replacing them with someone younger and cheaper. Most of the players you would think we would be moving on (Chamberlain, Keita, Shaquiri and Origi) aren't playing great or injured all the time so getting big money for them is unlikely. We'd also have to replace them in the squad which isn't going to be cheap. I can't see us cashing in on Salah or Mane as that would leave us very short for goals but if we don't get champions league then some of the stars might want to move on anyway.
Whether we need to do a rebuild in the summer or not I can't see FSG spending much as long as the covid situation stays the same.

Agree with points 1, 2 & 3 but point 4 is a bit hard to do with how we've been fucked over by it this season, and again today.
Then to add to it, City get given a pen today after Gundogan scrapes the back of Hojberg's ankle but is 'fouled' in the coming together.
But no, that initial foul can't be checked because VAR is there only to confirm whether the ref made a clear and obvious error in awarding the pen.

Think of Everton (foul on VVD, Mane offside), Spurs (Bobby's "handball" on the halfway line while being fouled by Dier), todays shove on Mane, which they immediately went and scored from and their first goal. And there are many more I can't remember right now.

End of the day, it's hard not to whine about it when we've been fucked over by it more than any other team in the league

We just have to ride it out at this point. We were good today for 75 minutes. Not great, but certainly better without the ball and deserving of a point or more. I wasn't expecting much more than that.

Individual errors cost us.

This is different now because the game has been irrevocably ruined by VAR and the disastrous officiating. I honestly don't care any more. I'm not the only one either. Depressing.

We dominated for 75mins and had Mane/Salah been more clinical in the first few minutes, we'd have won this game comfortably.

We've been very profligate in front of goal this season.

Last year, in the first minute Salah is scoring instead of diving. Mane is scoring that header against City. Salah is scoring against Brighton in the opening minutes.

I also can't help but feel we've been "figured out" somewhat. Mane and Salah are our only genuine goal threats. Everyone knows this. Narrow off and close the centre (something Napoli did against us time and again), and our fall back plan is (as described by one of my friends as) "get the ball wide, cross and inshallah". And that's another thing, our crossing isn't what it was either. We're not getting behind teams as easily with Robbo/Trent.

Perhaps a large part of that comes for the lack of protection we're getting in midfield and the lack of confidence in dealing with teams 3 v 3 at the back (as we lack the pace and strength of VVD/Gomez/Fab).

Injury after injury after injury.

I still think we’ll make top 4 and still fancy us in the CL.

I’ll take a ‘poor’ season after our last 3. There are a whole host of reasons for it. Hopefully it means we get some big signings in the summer.

It’s why Jota was so important.
