This is the kind of game when a captain really is needed. Most games they're not, but these games, god yes. And Gerrard just goes into his shell when he's needed most. In the old days he'd bomb on and get a goal, but now there's just a shell of a man out there.

Yep, his captaincy was only effective when he led by example.
