The Arsenal hierarchy have warned manager Arsene Wenger that they expect the Premier League club to end their four-year trophy drought this season.

Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis said: "It's absolutely our ambition to win a trophy this year. I couldn't be more clear on that. Second, third or fourth isn't good enough. We want to win something - this season - and we believe we have the squad to do that."

Wenger's last trophy came in 2005 when the Gunners beat Manchester United in a penalty shoot-out to win the FA Cup. Despite consistently finishing in the top four places in the league and reaching the Champions League and Carling Cup final Arsenal have not laid their hands on any silverware since.

Wenger has always given the excuse that he is developing a young team but Gazidis insists it is time to deliver.

"We have created and developed a team playing fantastic football," the 45-year-old told the Star on Sunday. "It's wonderful to watch and very exciting at times. We've spoken about the group's potential. Now - and by now I mean this season - it's very important for us to focus strongly on winning something for the fans. They deserve it."

They wont let Wenger go, no-one else could achieve what he has with the money he's been given & they know it.

Moyes is the only comparable manager in that respect but Wenger outshines him too.

Both very 'hateable' cunts though.

Bit shortsighted that. Its understandable that they want a trophy. It has been a while. However, they have the makings of an excellent team and they have a cracking stadium. If they can keep qualifying for the CL they will be in a very good position in a few years' time.

I know a fun Gunners fans who'd be happy to see a change. You can only be so grateful for what he did 5 years ago for so long.

If he's not spending money available to him out of principle, I can understand wanting a change. If that isn't the case however, he's pretty much doing the best he can and they'll struggle badly to improve upon him.

Me too.

Its not really a win a trophy or get out, it's just a gentle kick up the arse. Something i've been waiting to hear for ages. He's had it far too easy these last couple of years
