It seems like the news at Newcastle United continues to get worse, as we hear today that strength and conditioning coaches Mark Hulse and his assistant, Robbie Elliott, have left St James’s Park just days before the start of pre-season training on Wednesday.

Mark Hulse is highly rated and and both coaches have been hired by Liverpool, and this will leave Newcastle with no fitness coaches at a time when fitness will be job one with the Newcastle players.

I'm not exactly excited about the fact that we're signing fitness coaches from a team that can't keep anyone fit.

Hulse, who will be Newcastle’s loss and Liverpool’s gain, was a Kevin Keegan appointment last summer and previously worked with England and Crystal Palace.

Elliott played with United during the Entertainers era and went on to play for Bolton Wanderers, United again and then had spells at Sunderland, Leeds and Hartlepool.

He was recently commended by FA Vase winners Whitley Bay for his work in the build-up to their Wembley win over Glossop North End after calculating players’ fluid intake on their run to the final.

ALAN SMITH insists there won't be a fitter team in the Premier League than Newcastle this season - thanks to the Incredible Hulse. :🙂

Fitness guru Mark Hulse has whipped the Toon into tip-top shape with a punishing pre-season training programme.

And former England striker Smith, 27, believes that guarantees boss Kevin Keegan's stars will never run out of gas in games.

Former FA and Crystal Palace fitness coach Hulse, brought to St James' Park by Keegan towards the end of last term, has put United's band of underachieving aces through a summer of sheer torture.

Ex-Leeds and Manchester United hitman Smith said: "All the lads have taken to Mark really well, but his training hasn't half been difficult.

"He has really put us through it - but it has been good because it is just what we needed and we realise ourselves that it had to be done.

"The gaffer has said that, with the size of our squad, we need to be one of the fittest teams in the Premier League. That is why we didn't really do a lot of football work in the first two or three weeks after reporting back."

Former England Under-21 fitness coach Hulse left Palace during the close season after working with Neil Warnock and almost joined Bolton Wanderers under Sammy Lee, only for the deal to fall through when the ex- Liverpool star parted company with the Reebok Stadium club.
