The 20-year-old Everton star has earned rave reviews this season with a string of stunning displays that have put him in line to play at the World Cup with England.
Starsport understands Liverpool are willing to smash their transfer record to land the midfield ace with boss Brendan Rodgers a huge admirer.
But he will face a battle to sign him, with any possibility of Barkley being up for grabs sure to spark interest from a string of Premier League rivals including the likes of Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea.

Everton insist they are not willing to listen to offers for their star midfielder and instead hope to tie Barkley down to a new long-term deal in the summer with a massive pay rise.
Goodison boss Roberto Martinez recently said he would reject any bid.
But such a huge offer may prove too tempting to turn down.
Barkley is a Toffees fan and has been at the club since he was a child so a move to Liverpool could cause problems for him and his family.
And it will take a lot to persuade him to leave Goodison Park for any club if Martinez's side qualify for the Champions League.
Any hopes of landing Barkley will be significantly increased if Arsenal pip the Toffees to the top four.
Liverpool also know Everton will do everything possible to stop their prized asset making the short move across Stanley Park to their arch rivals.

The last player to make the same move was Portugal defender Abel Xavier in 2002.
Rodgers will be looking to strengthen significantly in the summer whether Liverpool win the title or not.
He is keen to ensure their title challenge is not a flash in the pan and will be backed again by club owners Fenway Sports Group with a list of other top targets currently being drawn up.
The American owners are happy to splash the cash on young English talent as they proved when they gave former boss Kenny Dalglish a record £35m to bring Andy Carroll to Anfield in 2011.
Carroll was eventually sold by Rodgers to West Ham at a £20m loss.
But it would be no such gamble with Barkley if - and it is a big if - they can get him to Anfield.

Surely not for £38m and at that price we could get Pogba.

I genuinely think barkley will be an absolute superstar at the right club, and rodgers in particular could get mould him into our team perfectly. There aren't many good CM's around and he's got the strength, intelligence, power and motivation to go really really far.

It's a strange one because 38m is crazy but if we do go on to win the title and our transfer kitty is healthy, he'll seem like a shrewd signing.

Oh and about Pogba, he's very good too no doubt, but for me i've seen enough in Barkley to think he could be the closest thing to a natural stevie g replacement.

This has Andy Carroll written all over it. Andy was a beast at Newcastle. Could he step up to a big club? Could he bollocks, and we paid stupid money on a gamble. That went tits up.
I'd like to sign Barkley, but for that money? Thanks but no thanks.

Are we judging him based on this season alone? Michu looked awesome last season. How do we know this kid is not a flash in the pan?

I've admired him for years, so no it's not based on one season. Also, Michu's injuries probably ruined this season for him.

He looks about thirty. I don't know what they make them do at their academy but it bloody ages them quickly. Rooney looked about 28 when he broke through.

We should not laugh at this - it could be a bad sign. The late Angelo Dundee (Boxing Coach), said of Mike Tyson when he was in his 20's - that he was the oldest 20 year old he had seen. This is something you need to look out for in athletes - because it basically means they age faster IMO.

Probably not at half this valuation. Not that he's not worth it necessarily, but we'd end up overpaying to a direct rival. Bad combination.

He's boss, but he'll end up at City.

Both feet... kinda rare that he's as good with both at every part of his game. That amazing injury time free kick against West Brom that came off the underside of the cross bar, he said after the match that he didn't even know what foot to hit it with so he just ran at it and twatted it with the nearest one. That goal against Newcastle - the defence don't know what to do with him coz they don't know which way he's going to go or what foot he's gonna turn on. Which he have in Suarez, Sterling and Sturridge, but having in at CM would be awesome. He's gonna boss midfield for a decade, but not here. Talented scousers who are unfortunate enough to be born blue end up in Manchester. Rooney, Rodwell and now him.

And yeah, he's thick as fuck.

Never going to happen.

Good thing our academy is starting to produce good players now.
