Virgil Van Dijk

He was very good today. There is an assured calmness to him. He didn't look out of place at all in his first start.

By comparison Matip plays like a fanny, he's all over the place most of the time.

It was almost like Matip was intimidated by the presence of a superior CB partner next to him wasn't it?

Our problem was never central defenders being incapable of doing good things, it was them being incapable of not doing bad things. Positive start, but lets see how he fairs over the next couple of months before getting carried away.

Great goal. Good debut.

I think he was lacking in match sharpness/fitness and looked a bit nervous when going up. But defensively he won a lot of headers today and I was impressed with his organisation and talking throughout.

At one point in the 2nd half, when a throw in was being taken on the right, DCL pulled back post on Robertson. VVD actually switched positions with Robertson and went LB, basically telling DCL you aren't going to have it easy if a cross comes in. That's good leadership.

I'm expecting that and more from him, especially in terms of playing out of the back. I'm sure it will come with time, more sharpness and as he settles in. I'm also expecting at least another 2-4 goals before the end of the season. We get a lot of set pieces (benefit of having nippy players) and with Coutinho's delivery (should he stay), VVD will be the go-to man in the box.

I hope he goes and speaks to Klopp and says "What the fuck is that keeper behind me? I'm gonna punch that cunt soon".

I think he kind of was going to do that in the game itself. But yeah - so fucking impressive, and you know what - I did not feel nervous about our defence at all with that giant at the back. The goal - just confirmed something for me - he is going to be a good luck charm for us and may mean we start winning shit. Sometimes certain talented players arrive but despite their obvious impact in games - they don't bring you the victories and cups and leagues. Then others come along and they bring you the luck and the wins. It was so obvious how he was organising that back line today - and the goal they scored - where did it come from ? - oh yes as Murphy said - Can stopped tracking back.

Great debut - and I am pretty sure there is so much to come from this guy.

He's just Virgil now. Has earned the right to be one of those one name cunts.

He might improve these clown goalies, just a fraction, by telling them what they should be fucking doing. That was what, 3 or so times he told dickhead to do his job and come for the ball.

But he'll have to stop himself from switching positions with the keeper.

He is, but it looks like rather than him adjusting to the team, the biggest thing will be teammates adjusting to carrying out his directions. Karius was too slow off his line for VVD's liking several times today - well, Ming is even slower. Matip still looks a bit nervous in his presence, but hopefully that's temporary. Robertson has adjusted very well already - what a performance from him!

I'm glad he got the winning goal in the first game, because if there was ever any question who is the top dog in that defense, it's obvious now. Everybody in that back 5 will now pretty much do what Van Dijk tells them to.

I think the private conversations he had with Klopp before joining may have been:

Klopp: "Look I can't afford to buy a decent keeper and you - but have two really fucking thick keepers working for me at the moment - can you help ?"
Virgil: "Yes of course - I can do both jobs at once"

Klopp: BUY !!! - bargain one for the price of two.

Amazing how he was completely unmarked from a corner twice - either his positioning is very good or the opposition defenders are scared to challenge him directly

He was great today. Good to see someone finally giving the clowns in the back and in goal what's for. I'm with Mystic, though, let's see how he fares long term. Very promising start, though.

His talking and organising was more impressive than his goal. I was in the kop tonight and you could hear him belting orders out to all the others. In his first game. I fucking love that.

He’s gonna be a beast.

By the way I’ve just got home and I’m fucking destroyed. Boss night. I know I’m getting old though, 10 years ago I would have gone to town after a Friday night game beating those fucking gang of cunts

We've been crying out for that since Carra retired.
