Virgil is God

One thing that I love about VVD is the way he completely changes the opposition tactics. In the old days, a winger runs down he line, looks up and puts a cross in the box, or maybe a midfielder tries a hopeful long ball. Nowadays wingers run down the line and then realize that if they cross anywhere near VVD its almost the same as kicking the ball into touch or for a goal kick so they come back and try something else lol. Having VVD narrows the options for opposition attacking players, you essentially have to try to score by avoiding him in your attacking play which makes a change from the old days where opposition players actively targeted our central defenders.

I don’t recall Hansen being particularly blessed in the pace department - wasn’t Lawrenson the speedy one?

Yes, Lawro was also a magnificent footballer and he did make Jockey look even better than he actually was from time to time... They were EASILY our best ever CB pairing, and I'm not sure that I've ever seen better, anywhere.

That said, Jockey wasn't slow - He just never looked like he was was trying... He glided around the field, like an air-hockey puck, usually dictating the match from CB, and so he looked slower than he was. Plus, his reading of the game was so imperious, that he rarely needed to break into a sprint... he just saw things develop on the field faster than most other players, and so was already there before opponents even decided to do whatever they were doing.

So I'm a coach and I believe teams are getting it sooooo wrong when it comes to defeating us.

They are trying to attack down the right all the time as TAA ie eeen as the weak link. The problem you have attacking down that side is that when you cross it into the box, you're essentially crossing it to Virgil to clear as you said.

And if you manage to dribble past Trent and JoGoe is playing that side, you're left with a 1 v 1 situation against him and that's not very favourable given his speed and strength. If Lovren is playing there or Matip, i can understand. But you're effectively asking a player to beat Trent and then draw out the CB, that's it Hendo (RCM) or Fabinho (DM) isn't covering which one of them always is. I think attacking down our right side is such an inviting trap because Mo barely tracks back. But the goals are to be hand down the other side.

We know Robbo plays there. And Mane tracks back and Gini covers well. And Virgil is there. But.. When you attack down our left, if you can get the better of Robbo, Van Dijk is caught in a decision to come out or to cover the near post cross. He can't do both. Sometimes like against United at OT, he's caught doing neither well and you have a better chance at getting on the end of a cross as the Joe and Trent aren't very good in the air. As shown by that Wolves goal the other week.

Napoli goal and Wolves disallowed goal at Anfield, other examples of balls attacks down our left being successful. Anyways., i hope teams keep on going down our right. We seem set up to deal with that.

As I've said before, there's not many players - especially in defence - who can make the crowd actually *laugh* when they produce a bit of skill, but Hansen's insouciant swerves as he strolled past attackers trying to close him down, or calmly nicking the ball from a totally oblivious attacker, often did.

He was just so fucking cool

I think it was Ron Atkinson who said it, and it sums him up perfectly, that he looked like he was playing in a dinner jacket - quick, yet calm 90 minutes, then off for some canapés

Yeah, he was indeed, although Hansen wasn't Hyppia slow.

I don't think. Ask someone older.

Depends over what distance. Anything longer than 10 yards was definitely not Jocky's strong point (to say the least) but during those first ten - especially when allied to his uncanny anticipation - he was nippy enough.

Yeah, he didn't really have the frame or gait to be really quick, but that also probably made him seem slower than he really was, and playing next to Lawro didn't help, as he was *seriously* rapid

It would take a combination of unlikely factors to see VvD leave in my opinion. A world class club willing to spend north of £140m on a 29 year old defender, a massive wage packet and a team/coach that looks like building a very successful project in tje short term. I dont see that list of criteria at any club in Europe right now.

Financially maybe only Real or PSG could do it but PSG is a joke club in a 2nd tier league that every top player wants out of and Real are in the process of a big rebuilding project that may take years to bear fruit, by which time VvD would be well past his prime.

The way he coasted, glided, bossed and STROLLED across the entire park yesterday was simply taking the piss.

It wasn’t even arrogance. It was as if he was playing in 2nd/3rd gear amongst kids.

Made me LOL more than a couple times too.

If the back heel went in, it would have caused even more fumes coming out and erupt in a great big explosion in some fan site. Beautiful control first touch. Calm as you like back heel strike. What a beauty. Shame it did not result in a goal.
