Vaarwel Gini

He is great, but when the club refuses to give him what he wants, he wants to go. So what can you do?

Tielemans, please.
He can play. Hendo also not getting younger.

And I think many are hopelessly overestimating him.

No we are not - his effectiveness has been defined by Klopp's instructions - take the game against Barca - that was a different Gini to the one we see when played with Henderson, and Milner. In his first season with us - I thought he played the part of that 'Ghost' type player that suddenly appears to score some critical goals, and throughout his time you can rely on him to keep the ball and retain possession. Above all his availability has been key at times to actually having a midfield due to the injuries to all the others. I can only remember him being off for duty during his first season due an injury - other than that he has played so many games for us, I think we will find it hard to find someone who can play that much with the way we play - although Fab is coming close to it.

So basically Lucas but with two important goals against Barcelona? Is that what you're trying to say?

Haha. I stand by the point but thought I probably don't need to make it again, and this tends to bear that out. 😀

[article]“I’m told that in the last few weeks the situation has gotten really, really complicated with Gini Wijnaldum,” transfer expert Fabrizio Romano told Anfield Watch.

“The last offer from Liverpool was in December and the player wasn’t happy with it. As such, he’s seriously considering his future at the moment.

“He’s really respectful of the club and of the fanbase and the people around the club. He loves Liverpool which is why he’s not going to sign for a new club until he’s told Liverpool what he’s going to do.

“He’s not made his final decision yet, but it’s really, really complicated. I think that’s why Liverpool are planning to be ready in the summer in case he doesn’t sign a new deal.

“He’s not convinced about the economical part. But also about what the project is going to be in the future and what his personal life and family want. It is really difficult at the moment. I think in February we will have a decision…”[/article]

In other words, Barcelona are seriously skint.

So are we, seemingly.

So basically he's been offered a lowball contract by us and there are no guarantees of anything with regards to Barca/Koeman come the Summer, so he's still weighing up which team to throw under the bus.

I'm not arsed either way.

So I'm totally zen here.

Still, there's no lack of suitors. Yeah we've read about Barca, but I bet there's a lot of top teams in Europe looking to sign him and willing to pay him what he wants. Nothing is except his own conscience is keeping him from joining an English team for free.

Barca already 10 pts behind A.Madrid, the power struggle, Messi's insane contract being leaked - they are a mess, there's little to suggest Koeman will even be the Barca Manager come the end of the season (or Messi ?) if they bomb out the CL and drop down a competitive league table with Real & Serville breathing down their neck.

Gini seems like a fairly smart guy, a move to Barca for the sake of saying you played there seems like a bad play by anyone's books, hopefully we give him 3 years or whatever he's after and remuneration suitable for a player of his ability and value to the current project and move on. This season has been a shit show of injuries, can't have next season marred by fucking Naby Keita or some other potato filling the void left by Gini....

It's a strange one.

I'd rather he stayed, although we do have options. I think there are arguably question marks over the futures of Ox, Shaqiri, Keita and maybe even Milner.

Gini is becoming a bit of an experienced old head and that's exactly what we need to maintain, to keep that continuity and composure on the pitch in big games and alongside the likes of Jones.

I'm not fussed about Keita, we haven't seen nearly enough of him at his best and his injuries are as bad as Matip's. While I wouldn't be devastated if we lost Ox, only due to injuries, he's been decent for us. Shaqiri is a real talent and you know what you get with Milner, even though his best years are behind him, so I'd prefer we kept both of them. Shaqiri's attitude has been top-notch here and he's fought his way back into the side, which to me is always the sign of a winner.

Preferably we keep all of them, but with Jones and Thiago also in the mix, before we even think about Fabinho and Henderson, we're well placed should we have to lose someone.

And you have to argue that many players of his ilk have gone to Barca or Madrid previously and been completely underappreciated. He's fairly crucial to how we tick and how hard we work, how tough we are in midfield, but they never really want that. You look at them and more or less every position has a perceived style that should step in, a previous Barca player that the incoming player compares to. Aside from being Dutch and Barca's history with Dutch players, that's about as far as it goes.
