Ugly Gaga

Oh, and that 'dress' reminds me of the gruesome end to the film, Martyrs.

I do wish Lady GaGa would concentrate on the music and do less crazy hype and changing the world nonsense. :🙂

University offers Lady Gaga sociology course

Lady Gaga Prof Deflem says he has seen Lady Gaga in concert 30 times

The University of South Carolina has developed a sociology course dedicated to the life, work and rise to fame of pop star Lady Gaga.

Lady Gaga and the Sociology of the Fame is to be taught by Professor Mathieu Deflem, a fan of the singer.

Course documents said students would learn to "engage in sound and substantiated scholarly thinking" on issues related to her fame.

The course, which has its own blog, is due to start in spring 2011.

The Belgian born sociologist, whose research interests also include counter-terrorism, international policing, crime control and internet technology, says he has seen Lady Gaga in concert 30 times.
'Sociological dimensions'

"We're going to look at Lady Gaga as a social event," Prof Deflem told the USC student newspaper, the Daily Gamecock.

End Quote Professor Mathieu Deflem Sociologist

"So it's not the person, and it's not the music. It's more this thing out there in society that has 10 million followers on Facebook and six million on Twitter. I mean, that's a social phenomenon."

The course description says it aims to "unravel some of the sociologically relevant dimensions of the fame of Lady Gaga with respect to her music, videos, fashion, and other artistic endeavours".

It will look at business and marketing strategies, the role of old and new media, fans and live concerts, gay culture, religious and political themes, sex and sexuality, and the cities of New York and Hollywood, it says.

Prof Deflem said he initially planned to call the course the Sociology of Fame or the Sociology of Celebrity, and to use Lady Gaga as an example.

"Then I thought, 'Oh, what the hell? Let's make the whole freaking course about Lady Gaga and her rise to fame.'

Also a fan of Frank Zappa, Prince, Led Zeppelin, Alice Cooper, Status Quo and Ritchie Blackmore, Prof Deflem says his interest in Lady Gaga began when he first saw her perform on television on 9 January 2009.

"I hope that [prospective students] are at least somewhat fans of Gaga," he told the student newspaper.

"They don't have to be hardcore fans. The better fan will not necessarily be the better student. But you have to have some interest in the topic. So if you really don't like her, you probably shouldn't take the course."

Speaking to the BBC, he said the media reaction to the launch of the course has been "simply staggering", and the academic endeavour has become caught up in the very phenomenon it is exploring.

"The story has gone viral... My work on terrorism got a lot of attention as well, but that is dwarfed by the Gaga course!", he said.

How does that sound to you Portly?

On a side note, just finished 3 nights of Lady Gaga shows. Pretty much a good show even if you are not a fan of her or her music.

It's good to hear the Americans have loopy university courses the same as we do, Bradley. I can see that a student studying something like sociology or communications might make Lady GaGa the subject of their thesis, but to make a course out of it is a step too far! The article doesn't explain what kind of "course" this is - surely not an entire degree course but possibly a module of a sociology degree.

How come you saw Lady GaGa three times if you are not a fan? Is your girlfriend one of GaGa's "Little Monsters?"

As I said before, GaGa knows how to put on a show, but I would rather she didn't try quite so hard and concentrated more on the music.

I work in an catering in an arena so see pretty much all the big shows. Gaga's show is weird though, acting out some sort of crazy story between most songs however there are a few really good video interludes that work well.

Super tight arse too!

Yes I saw her show in February when GaGa was at the Liverpool Arena. I agree the story about going to the Monsters' Ball doesn't hang together at all well! All the stage effects like the giant fish trying to eat GaGa were spectacular, but I wasn't sure that they were really necessary. Maybe it's my age.

I still have Lady GaGa's set at Glastonbury in 2009 on my TV box. I would have preferred something like that. Incidentally when I watch that now, I notice that she wasn't as thin then.

I do hope she is looking after herself! :🙂

I had heard she collapsed in the hotel on Monday night after here show, not exactly looking after herself it would seem. Still turned up for the show last night though.

One other thing, we have a 'VIP Bar', pretty much it's a bar away from the crowds and some food. It's pretty expensive. Anyway on each of the 3 nights the first guy through the door was an older fella in the same pair of shorts and tee-shirt, I thought he was on her crew/management. Turned out he was just a local guy doing some serious Gaga stalking. Portly, you may have competition!

There were a few other old guys at the Liverpool gig. The vast majority of the crowd were young girls, though. Even the lads seemed to have been dragged there by their girlfriends!

I'll bet you'd have cheered the other day when the "Poker Face" video appeared on the TV at the gym. 😉

I certainly would, Jules! Very occasionally George Sephton puts on a Lady GaGa disc in the run-up to a match at Anfield. This causes me to leap up from my corpse-like slump and dance around a bit.

You are ass mad, mate.
Not bad but you just know there is hefty langer waiting around the corner so it kind of ruins it.

Lady GaGa stars in tonight's Graham Norton Show, BBC1 10.35 p.m. (13th May). This is going to be a treat for GaGa fans and may produce some interesting stuff, as Norton doesn't hold back with his questions. 🙂

LOLZ!

Very good. If I didn't know, I would have guessed it was by Domenico Scarlatti! ;D
[/quote]

Scarlatti actually wrote relatively few fugues. It's more Bachian overall.

Either way it's a superb piece of musicianship.

Fight Rihanna?!? Chris Brown already tried that. And won.

Just a heads-up that Paul O'Grady's show at 9.00 p.m on ITV tonight (Friday 17th June) is a Lady GaGa Special!

Paul O'Grady and Lady Gaga seems an unlikely combination but from the write-up it looks OK. 🙂
