Uefa charges Sergio Busquets over racism claim

Uefa has launched a disciplinary case against Barcelona's Sergio Busquets over alleged racism in the Champions League semi-final with Real Madrid.

Real posted a video on their website before the second leg showing Busquets allegedly calling full-back Marcelo "mono" (monkey) in the first leg.

The case will be heard on Sunday with a decision due the next day.

The incident was one of several in a heated tie between the Spanish rivals, which Barca won 3-1 on aggregate.

Both clubs lodged complaints to European football's governing body after an ill-tempered first leg at the Bernabeu, which was won 2-0 by Barcelona.

Madrid were unhappy with the behaviour of the opposing players and the red card shown to midfielder Pepe (one of three dismissals during the game, along with Barca reserve goalkeeper Jose Pinto and Real coach Jose Mourinho).

Barca protested over Mourinho's post-match comments alluding to favours from Uefa in big Champions League games and questioning the Catalan club's relationship with the European governing body.

The complaints were dismissed by Uefa, with Mourinho later handed a five-game European ban for his remarks.

The former Chelsea and Inter Milan boss chose not to speak to the media ahead of the second leg of the semi-final at the Nou Camp, which finished 1-1, thus booking Barca's place in the Champions League final at Wembley, where they will play Manchester United.

Instead, it was left to Mourinho's assistant Aitor Karanka to bemoan Uefa's decision not to act on Real's claims of gamesmanship by Barcelona's players.

He said: "The match has been overshadowed by Uefa's resolution - it's on another plane now.

"We have been punished [with the suspensions for Pepe, Sergio Ramos and Mourinho], but there are [Barcelona] players who didn't respect the principles of fair play or who made racist insults, covering their mouths, who will be on the pitch.

"We say over and over there are double standards."

However, Barca coach Pep Guardiola countered by defending his players.

"My players are an example of professionalism and honesty," he said.

"Real might think we are unsporting but I think exactly the opposite. Fourteen of 20 players in the squad have grown up in this house and they all respect the values of the house.

"Mourinho was at Barcelona for five years and he knows our values: to win, fight and earn respect by respecting your rival."

I remember the days when Barca and Real were a credit to the game of football.

Their gamesmanship tarnishes football and leaves a lot to be desired!

Sorry to seem insensitive, but are they going to ban the fucker from the final?

Because I don' want him to not play against the Scum.

All this bollocks about Barca respecting their opponents is all my arse. EVERY fucking time we've played them they've come out with all kinds of disrepectful shite.

Busquets cleared to play for Barcelona in Wembley final

Barcelona midfielder Sergio Busquets can play in the Champions League final against Manchester United after being cleared of racial abuse.

Uefa has dismissed claims by Barca's Spanish rivals Real Madrid that Busquets racially insulted full-back Marcelo during their semi-final tie.

A statement on Barca's website read: "Uefa has rejected the complaint filed by Real Madrid."

Busquets is now free to line up against United at Wembley on Saturday 28 May.

European football's governing body said via a statement on its website that it had "decided to dismiss the complaint lodged by Real due to a lack of strong and convincing evidence".

Real posted a video on their website before the second leg showing Busquets allegedly calling Marcelo "mono" (monkey) during Barca's 2-0 win at the Bernabeu.

The incident was one of many in an ill-tempered match during which Real player Pepe and coach Jose Mourinho were sent off.

After the game both clubs lodged complaints about each other to Uefa.

The second leg at the Nou Camp ended in a 1-1 draw, with Barca going through to the final 3-1 on aggregate.

It is definitely still more of a problem here in Spain. They should throw the book at him IMO, it was blatant and whether it was done in order to wind the opposition player up even though he plays for a team in Madrid, a city where you can still but club memorabilia with fascist symbols on them is irrelevent.

I remember being quite stunned by the general reaction of the public and the press 6 or 7 years ago when Aragones called Henry a black monkey during training camp for the spanish national team... it was like they couldnt give a shit about it, In the UK he would have been sacked instantly.... but when the England team bowled up and instead of playing kicked fuck out them on the pitch, by way of revenge for a racist attack on a well respected and loved player Henry, it was only then that they got upset.

I love it here in Spain but it is definitely a more racist place than even the UK, Spanish olympic basketball team using their fingers to have slanty eyes during the Beijing Olympics.... thats no problem obviously... its just a joke etc etc...

I also remember when we drew Barca in the CL a few years back and the newspapers talked of "the Hooligans" are coming etc .... like we were some kind of uneducated barbarian horde. I fucking loved it when we beat them really I did.

Some of it is purely linguistic culture and form, they literally call a black person "Negro" or a Chinese person "Chino" as those are the actual words in Spanish to use! but then blacking up and pretending to be Hamiltons family at the Spanish grand prix in the crowd etc just because they all wanted Alonso to win.... and the cameras picking them out and the commentators laughing and joking about it on national telly... its a different fucking world it really is. So much of the work done culturally in Britain since Barnes was having bananas thrown at him still needs doing here in Spain, you can argue about the bad side of political correctness all you like and rampant immigration does definitely cause problems no doubt about it but at its core racism causes division and pain, it is pathetic and fearful and should not be tolerated, Guardiola should come out and apologise and Barca should punish busquets.

...apart from "even more racist than the UK". Comparatively speaking the UK is not a particularly racist country.

Well, things are a hell of a lot better, but it's still out there.

I take your point though.

Its not a particularly demonstrative country, tolerant to a degree and doesn't often get in your face in a patriotic sense, at least not when you live inside it but one look at the daily mail will tell you that there is definitely racism in the UK, as there is anywhere in the world. Perhaps you are right I could have left the word "even" out of the sentence.

West Ham has said one of its players was racially abused at an end-of-season dinner during which troubled flared.

BBC football correspondent Dan Roan said forward Demba Ba was the target of the abuse during Monday's gala dinner at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London.

Trouble is thought to have broken out at the £275-a-head event in Park Lane when a player refused to sign an autograph for a supporter.

The Metropolitan Police said no arrests were made.

West Ham co-owner David Sullivan later revealed the incident centred on a drunken fan racially abusing a player.

Mr Sullivan told Sky Sports News: "It was one individual who had too much to drink, sadly a problem in British society.

West Ham's relegation to the Championship was confirmed with a 3-2 defeat at fellow strugglers Wigan Athletic - Ba scoring both goals for the Hammers.

Just over an hour after the match, the club's owners confirmed they had parted company with manager Avram Grant.

The cab driving racist cockney west ham fan is a cliche which actually does exist... they are not hard to find honestly!

West Ham fans are often pretty brutal cunts and have very little qualms about spitting out a bit of racist bullshit.

Many of them are very nice mind you...
