Fucking love his potential. He's got so many qualities - physicality, great technique and a proper fighters attitude. I genuinely think he could be a player in the mould of Keane or Vieira. I'd build the team around him.

Yes. He needs being given his head, not locked into some Hodge-like rooted role. There's a wonderful sense of spontaneity about the way he plays, and when he goes on a run, that is just what is needed when teams turn up with a plan to counter Rodgers' over-discussed tactical shape.

I think Matic's probably the best CM and the closest thing to Vieira / Keane right now in the league. I'd love Can to watch and learn from this guy and aim to get to his level in the league:

As I said in the "Step up" thread - I expect Can to improve this season, but as part of the development, I'm prepared for him to cost us some goals. The staff and fans will have to be patient and not knock his confidence back.

My only doubt about him is his recovery speed - he doesn't seem to turn very quickly and that's a bit of a problem when facing fleet-footed or nippy AMs. That further emphasizes the need for him to develop his ability to read situations and position himself so that he doesn't find himself charging at opponents or sticking too closely to them and getting turned and burned (same could be said of Lovren actually).

I think Matic is quite different from Keane/Vieira. He's the deepest holding mid, in the mould of Didi or Petit, whereas Keane/Vieira were the 2nd CMs - enforcers rather than pure DMs. Nicky Butt or Phil Neville were the holders next to Keane, whereas Petit or Gilberto were the holders next to Vieira.

I envision Can as a 2nd CM rather than as a DM as I agree wholly with Macca that his spontaneity would be curtailed in a rooted role like DM. I don't want him to have the pressure of constantly taking up sound positions and tracking opponents. I'd leave to that to a proper holder (like Illarramendi) and let Can do his 'take the game by the scruff of the neck' shit.

Agree entirely with the first paragraph.

Re your 2nd paragraph, and Can as a centre-mid in general, I'm not sure. I was thinking about doing a seperate thread on this discussion actually cos it's a pretty big one. In summary, I've got my reservations - I think he lets too much of the game pass him by, and in centre mid you've got to be 'on' for 90 minutes, and there's just something about Can's approach to the game that makes me think that good midfielders would bypass him, or find at least 1 to 2 moments in a game where his concentration dips.

That and his style. Nothing wrong with how he plays with the ball at his feet, but is he the sort that wants to do the ugly stuff? That wants to give up his game for others? To track runners for 90 minutes? And to do the dirty stuff? I'm not so sure.

I think he' s year or two away from being a centre mid that can start and impact games consistently if I'm honest.

I think that may be because Can's fitness isn't up there yet. He looks gassed at times, and you can see him being languid when he's catching a breath. He's built like a brick shithouse, but I think if he wants to play CM effectively, he might want to get leaner.

In any event, he needs to play there regularly to develop his sense of playing the position as well.

I think that's a good judgement. It took Hansen (who initially showed the same glimpses of exceptional class) about two years to really learn to get the balance right between his distinctive skills and instincts and the responsibilities that came with his position in the side, and it'll probably be the same with Can. Apart from everything else, he needs to control his temperament better - he picked up stupid bookings and a sending off last season when he cracked under pressure, and he'll be tested far more in midfield - but he's clearly worth being very patient with.

I love when the Canwagon picks up some momentum and is found careering off down the pitch.

Both Ilori and Can are starting in the semi final.

edit: Scratch that. Looks like Ilori is still hurt from the injury he picked up in the last game and there was a late change to the starting lineup for Portugal.

Kevin Volland is starting as the lone forward for the Germans.

Bernardo Silva (Monaco) puts Portugal 1-0 ahead. Exciting player this lad is. Carvalho and Sergio Oliveira (Porto) also look good. Can's playing in a very advanced position, pushed up high behind the German forward line - he's not been in the game much and Portugal is definitely the better side in the first 30 minutes.

Ter Stegen and his defenders have probably given their fans a few heart-in-mouth moments as they're being pressed really hard by the Portuguese players when they have the ball. Ter Stegen looks shit.

And 2-0 now to Portugal, straight off a corner, far post. Terrible defending.

Can's advanced position puts him in direct competition to Carvalho's deep role, but he's giving the Portuguese enough room to pick and play three same passes straight down into the space between the German LCB and LB for Ricardo Pereira to latch onto. One of these earlier in the game resulted in Oliveira eventually putting a daisy cutter onto the post.

3-0 now just at the stroke of half time. These Germans are defending like us - Portugal's pace in front is just tearing the German backline a new one.

The €15.75m Monaco splashed out on Bernardo Silva (when he was only a Benfica B team player) looks like a shrewd move.

LOL 4-0 now just 48 seconds into the second half. Deflected goal from a stiff shot, but that was again, poor defending. Can started the second half in a deeper CM role as opposed to the AM role which he struggled with in the first half. He was nowhere near the play when the latest goal was scored though.

As noted, that Bernando Silva will be one heck of a player. Unfortunately there's no way of prizing him away from Monaco.
