No player good enough to be even a stand-in for Torres WILL come on a free. Who else do we go for as second-string striker who's good enough, cheap enough to leave enough cash for our other priorities, and Prem-experienced?

Andrei Voronin.

Wonder what the speculated transfer fee is?

They signed him on bosman ruling, will want to balance the books/wage bill cos of relegation - can't do that with Downing/Wheater cos of their injuries so hopefully that means he'll not be too costly. He'll be a good squad signing. Versatile, already have premier league experience and should be hungry (in the Benayoun mould).

Some good points there and I'd be happy enough with Bent if we did get him as Torres' stand-in.  However, I don't see Tuncay as being mere "padding" any more than Bent would be.  He's not as quick but he's trickier and more versatile, so he could play Torres' role when we needed that as well as covering those other positions, and a few mill.off the fee will be more than useful elsewhere.

Someone mentioned Nemeth, who I rated when I saw him before.  Is he fit and ready after his injury?  If so, then yes, he could be the answer.

Tuncay leading the line? The Turkish midget would get battered. It'd just never happen.

He'd be most successful in the Gerrard role - but he's never going to replace him, let face it -  and then reasonably effective on the flanks. You have to see Tuncay as a Yossi MkII. Ergo, not 'striking back-up'.

Bent's credentials for that role are especially fitting; he's shown at Chalton he can score a huge amount of goals as a lone striker, as well as displaying similar ability in a 4-4-2 at Spurs - which is exactly what we need.

Torres doesn't lead the line either. We don't play with a line for our point man to lead. Our formation calls for someone to run around, keep the defence off balance and take a chance when it comes. Tuncay can certainly do that, and has done for Middlesboro when others around him have gone AWOL.

But yes, as I said I'd take Bent instead, PROVIDED the higher fee he'd cost us didn't scupper our efforts to strengthen elsewhere in the team.

I am actually serious.

Bent is average and, more importantly, lacks heart. Not ideal for a title challenging team.

Is there not some youngster out there, somewhere, that we could pick up for the same price?

We've millions invested in an Academy and a scouting network, a scouting network capable of finding lesser known gems such as Arbeloa and Skrtel for relatively low fees. So why is it, when we're in desperate need of quality outwide and upfront, with much need at the same time to be building towards a future, can we not spot a decent striker or winger for hope nor money?

I really like Tuncay and would not mind him at Anfield if our squad was different...........

The way I see it, Tuncay is a lovely footballer. He can score goals but ultimately I see him half creator/ball player and half striker.

For me, we have that in Gerrard and Benayoun in his absence.

If Torres is injured we need a dumb animal that can run in behind defenders so that we keep the same set up. A more polished Ngog, a consistent and performing Babel or just more likely - a new striker.

Tuncay doesnt fit that bill for me. It would remind me too much of the Voronin/Kuyt partnership if he was upfront without Torres i.e. all work and trying to create some nice football moves but who's first instinct is not to lay it off and get in the box ala Peter Crouch.

Why not Polish N'Gog?

He's young, played a bit part this season and might flourish given a few games. Maybe over the summer he'll come good. In the meantime, it would be a waste of money.

Because what if Torres picks up a long-term injury, or has another disjointed season like his last?

N'gog should be playing in the cups and coming on as a sub in the final 30 minutes, etc, but we shouldn't find ourselves in a position where we're reliant upon him, he's not ready.

Another striker makes perfect sense.

Talented footballer but not sufficiently high quality to get excited about.

Hopefully this transfer window is about about adding quality not quantity for Rafa.

I want expensive star players to enhance rather than bolster our squad.

I have no idea where the money is coming from though.

typical rafa. lets chase squad players here and there spending a few million then complain when we fail to find the last 2 million on our number 1 first team targets.

i don't care if he's any good, if there's money left at the end buy him but not now!

You've kinda answered yourself there havnt you?

He's a good player and would be a good option off the bench, but for £8 million?

Rafa, pass the crack pipe.

Good golly Miss Molly.

I genuinely don't think Voronin passes the first of those three tests, not for LFC.  He has done well in the Bundesliga but (a) originally he did for us as well, only to tail off big-time, (b) he's tailed off there too, (c) the Bundesliga's a weaker league than the Prem and (d), after the things Voronin was saying when he was here, it wouldn't surprise me if his improvement at Hertha was due as much to relief at being away from the UK as to any other factor.

I was talking with Rosco about him in another thread.

I like him, he has always looked good when I've seen him...enthusiastic and tricky. A sort of cross between Benny and Dirk.

Around £5M would be a steal.

If I read that Fulham's transfer targets this summer were Tuncay, Wheater and Distin, I'd think "fair play, go for it".
If I read that those same players were targets for United, Chelsea or Arsenal, I'd piss myself laughing. Then pray that it came to pass.

Bad fuckin signings man.

Let's hope smoke & screen are words we're using in a couple of months whilst we chuckle about all this.

Jun 4 2009 by Ian Doyle, Liverpool Daily Post
MIDDLESBROUGH striker Tuncay Sanli would welcome a move to Liverpool after claiming he was being tracked by the Anfield outfit.

The Turkey international captain is expected to leave the Teessiders in the summer after Gareth Southgate’s side were relegated from the Premier League last month.

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez is in the market for a new striker during the transfer window after allowing Robbie Keane to leave in January.

Tuncay, who scored in Middlesbrough’s 2-0 win over Liverpool in February, is with the Turkey national team preparing for Friday’s friendly against France.

And when asked of possible interest from Liverpool, the 27-year-old said: “Yes, I’ve heard something about that, but nothing official has arrived to me. Of course I would like to play for a big club.â€

Benitez has made bolstering his strikeforce a priority, with Andrei Voronin expected to depart having returned from his season-long loan on Hertha Berlin.

Midfield is another area the Liverpool manager is looking to address. And having missed out on Gareth Barry, another Middlesbrough player, Gary O’Neil, is among several options being considered.

Benitez was linked with a move for the midfielder while the 26-year-old was at Portsmouth, and has continued to monitor his progress at the Riverside.

Reports in the Midlands yesterday claimed Liverpool made a last-ditch bid to sign Barry but the player had already decided upon a move to moneybags Manchester City.

Probably. But I feel this summer we are going to replace players with the same quality and not strengthen the bench.
