I know net transfer spend doesn't tell the full story, as we have extended the stadium, building a new training ground and just increased our wage bill by X% I'm pretty sure we have £50-70m to spend

@bluebell - all this net spend stuff is meaningless for the here and now. Don't understand how we have not even made one single major signing when all our rivals are in all appearances buying what may turn out to be very effective players.

Is that correct?? How are Everton in a positive position?

The mancs have strengthened in critical positions, even though it hasn't been cheap. With more stability their midfield will be able to commit forward more and they'll be more of a threat if at all decently coached.

I wouldn't care if we had strengthened, at all.

Utd are doing what we did last summer, paying big money for the best available players that adress long term issues in their team. It will improve them massively, especially if they add Dybala aswell.

If Koulibaly isn't available then I can't see anyone better than Maguire.
Same goes for Wan Bissaka. Can't think of a better available right back.

They could have signed Alderweireld for 25 mill £ earlier in the summer. But I doubt he would have gone there.

Utd are getting the best players they can get while being in the EL, and are still getting absolutly rinced for the fees.

But Alderweireld isn't necessarily better and he's much older.
Also when we bought Van Dijk he wasn't regarded as the best CB in the world. He still had something to prove.

Btw I really hope Coutinho gets loaned back to us. He knows how we play, he knows the team, he knows the city and he knows the league. I mean he'd just slot in.
Would be the perfect signing for us, especially now that Mane is out.
Rotate him amongst the front 3. That is if he accepts that kind of role. I'm in no way claiming that he should be ahead of anyone of our usual starters.

I’m surprised no one bought Alderweirld at 25M... what was it, wage demands?

Weird situation at Spurs, bunch of their top players and manager all want to leave and have pretty much said so in the media but no takers.

£20m plus wages of £15m for a 27-year-old, not forgetting him going on strike, so he can force his move to Barca. He can fuck-off. I hope no-one comes in for him, the chicken shit.
Dybala might be available for loans

He learned his lesson.

If they united keep progba and sign Dybala they could be much stronger. Dybala Best form was when linking up with progba

Just occurred to me that Utd have dropped £130m on AWB and Maguire.

Get dybala / Fernandes in and that's quite the first team over haul, don't imagine ogs would survive a shite season with that in mind

Copying quote posted my Modo in Brewster thread. Think it says a lot about our transfer strategy.

Brewster on why he almost left:

“A couple of years ago I was looking at the pathway into the Liverpool team and I thinking, ‘it is just going to be the same here as it was at Chelsea’,” he explains. “At the time there was Dom Solanke, Daniel Sturridge, Divock Origi and Danny Ings still here, all ahead of me. I was never thinking about getting more money, just realistically assessing the situation.

“You have the front three and then five or six senior strikers ahead of you so I thought a lot about it and spoke to my family and Leon [Anderson] my agent.
“Then things changed a bit. When I spoke to the manager he said, ‘You are going to be a top striker at this club. Not next season, but the season after you will be in my plans’. Then a few strikers moved out on loan.

“The manager kept that promise. I knew he was not chatting rubbish to me. That is why I chose to stay with the club because they showed the faith in me and believed in me. Now I am going to get the chance, it really is up to me to take it. When I look at where I am now I feel I made the right choice. Jurgen Klopp gives kids a chance.”

No doubt that quote was said behind the scenes and helped secure Elliott.

I think this is part of what Klopp means about long-term health of the club in regards to this year's transfer strategy. If he brings in another striker before giving Brewster the chance (especially an unproven one like some of the links), then this whole "gives kids a chance" ethos dies quickly.

We are quietly assembling the next generation, while the current one is still 25-28, because the kids believe that they will "get a chance" if they earn it - and, they do. Phenomenal future ahead.

The short-term/long-term thinking is like a 3-5 year chess game that Klopp and FSG seem to be pretty good at playing.

We are quietly assembling the next generation, while the current one is still 25-28, because the kids believe that they will "get a chance" if they earn it - and, they do. Phenomenal future ahead.
The one caveat being - we've had a lot of kids where expectations were high over the last decade+. Not many have come through. Maybe Klopp's encouragement will help. Maybe.

We're not signing Coutinho.
I remember going to the charity shield in 1988, and, on the morning of the match, the story broke that Ian Rush was coming back. He was actually at Wembley and was interviewed by the side of the pitch before the match started.

Its an omen

Disclaimer - in no way am I comparing Coutinho to Rush
