Gerrard needs to be our engine. He was born for this job. If we'd never had Alonso we wouldn't be confused about this point.
[/quote]

Thats horseshit because we DID have alonso, and we WERE a better team with him! Its Rafas fault that he's not here. Its Rafas fault by trying to replace him with Gareth fucking Barry (granted Alonso hadnt a great season the year before, but Gareth fucking Barry) and then eventually replacing him with the most injury prone player in Seria A.

Im also glad that Gerrard hasnt been asked to sit in midfield all season and be our engine because incase you havent been paying attention he's been shit this year. Also he's not the engine of the english team, nor is he played in the centre there either.....so not played in his born for position by two apparent world class managers!! Could it be that they see what us folk cant and that he is in fact better further up the pitch (when on top form) If it wasnt for mascher this season we'd be seriously fucked.

Its just frustration after frustration. We have to do something quick or face losing our best players. And because of Rafas stubbornness in general and retardedness in the transfer market we're not likely to do anything about it soon!

Its either that or we can just all blame Gareth fucking Barry!
[/quote]

Gerrard's best position is obviously open to debate but if he had been playing in Lucas's place in the centre of midfield this season, then I'd wager we'd be much closer to fourth place.

And Gerrard has spent much of his time for England under Capello on the left wing. Do you suppose that Capello thinks that is his best position or do you think perhaps he's trying to field the best team available to him?
[/quote]

Based on Gerrards form this season we may or may not be closer to 4th should he have played in the center as Lucas has played well at times when Gerrard has been invisible. Its one thing playing the best team available to you, but with Gerrard playing on the left in Capellos team then Capello is doing exactly what Rafa does with Stevie and thats playing him out of position from where Robinhood claims Gerrard was born to play! I dont know where Capello thinks is Gerrards best position, but he is a utility player so it is easy to move him. On the otherside, if it was pivotal to englands chances do you think hed play gerrard on the left or behind rooney? Especially now that Joe Coles back in the frame!

I still wouldn't break it up.
it shouldn't be that hard to find a CM who offers more going forwards than lucas. I will be fair to lucas though I think a lot of the reason he doesn't get forwards is because he is instructed to hang back, this wasn't a problem for xabi as he can hurt teams from a deep position but lucas simply doesn't have the passing range so should be given licence to get forwards.

Weren't you the King of the Xabi 'two shit seasons' Alonso mantra?

Well, apart from"Lucas is a good player"

Or "I want a manager who plays great football"

I said he was average by 'his' standands but I definately would have sooner seen mash sold than alonso if we needed money because I knew his loss would hit us hard. alonso collected the ball from the defenders and basically started our attacks and when pressure was mounting took the sting out of the tempo, that's a big loss.

I thought going into the season rafa would go 'well, we can't continue to play the way we did when alonso was here' and basically change the formation or the style but he basically put in lucas and expected things to continue on as normal, seriously wtf rafa!

For a while after Torres arrived Alonso was out of form and / or injured and Gerrarf played some great stuff linking up with Torres from CM.

I'm not saying that we never should have bought Alonso, just that as time went on, with Alonso in the side, many fans forgot that they used to know Gerrard as a wold class central midfielder. I think it's fair enough that considering we had both, and Mascherano, that given Gerrard was the most versatile by a long way, he should be the one to play out of position, but now there's only been Lucas keeping him out of CM and that was daft.

To assume that because Gerrard has been under par at second striker he would also have been under par in central midfield is a very peculiar form of confusion. If you've got three wheels and no handlebars, you might make a bicycle work pretty well using one wheel in place of the missing handlebars, but if you lose one of the wheels from down below and then you complain that the handlebar-substitute-wheel is the problem...well...

Quite comfortably one of the best sentences since the English language was formed. An analogy par excellence.

It's an analogy:

Team = bicycle
CM = wheel

You're just going to say "what?" again aren't you

Are you Rafa in disguise?

From SSN:

Benitez echoes Torres concerns
Anfield boss wants Europa League success to attract investors

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez has called on the club's hierarchy to find some investment for new players after agreeing with Fernando Torres on the failings at Anfield.

Torres has let it be known that allowing the likes of Xabi Alonso, Alvaro Arbeloa and Sami Hyypia leave last summer has proved costly in the Reds' miserable campaign.

Having begun among the favourites for the Premier League title, Liverpool are looking increasingly unlikely to even finish fourth and will have to overcome a first leg defeat to Benfica in the Europa League quarter-finals.

A league draw at Birmingham on Sunday has left Liverpool sixth, four points adrift of that all-important UEFA Champions League-qualifying position, having played a game more than both Manchester City in fourth and Tottenham in fifth.

Benitez believes Torres was correct in his assessment of the club's disappointing performance, with the Reds boss saying: "I agree with Fernando about a lot of things.

"He talks about it being a pity we finished with 86 points last year and we couldn't progress.

Better situation
"We need to sign some players, we need to bring in some money. We need an investor and then we can challenge in a better way.

"The players are working so hard and they feel they can do more.

"Fernando the other day (at Birmingham), he was feeling really tired. He was trying and the other players were trying but while we don't have the investor it will be difficult to go one step forward."

Benitez was speaking ahead of Thursday's second leg against Benfica at Anfield, with his side trailing 2-1 on aggregate.

"We will try to do our best tomorrow to win," he said. "Hopefully we can balance the books this year.

"We need now to perform on the pitch and create a better situation for the new investors."
Code:

This actually fucks me off royally. Blaming the lack of investment on the fact that we were not able to challenge on any fronts is a bit much. What about negative / defensive tactics? What about continuously playing players like Lucas week in week out when blind people can see that they offer feck all to us? What about the lack of flexibilty wrt substitutions and the timing thereof? The list goes on and on...

Don't get me wrong, I was chuffed to bits when we got Rafa and actually believed that he was the man to lead us to the title we all crave, even upto this season, but this is now becoming ridiculous.
We need to win the Europa Cup to attract investors...fuck that!

He needs to go. (end of rant...)

The usual excuse-making bollocks from Rafa.

His first concern should be to make the current crop of players perform to their potential. If he can do that, we'll improve markedly on the pitch, regardless of new investment.

Ha.

I just don't get why he gets smashed for saying what most of us are thinking.

Until I read the words "I royally fucked up this season, start to finish" attributed to him, he hasn't said what I'm thinking.

if everything shit is down to the manager then when the team is performing then the manager should reap all the praise as well? the manager is to blame for a lot of stuff but the players should take *some* of the blame, afterall it isn't rafa that misses sitters or fails to clear his lines at the back.

Until Rafa says he cannot be trusted with any more money due the amounts he has wasted in the last 2 years, then he certaily isn't saying what I am thinking.

Oh come on, you know full well it's annoying comment to make. The last thing anyone wants to hear is Rafa talking about the lack of money yet again. And even if things weren't as bad as they are, he should just be getting on with managing the team - it's not summer yet.

I agree. And despite thinking that it was some of his mistakes that contributed to us missing out on the title last season, I gave him all the credit in the world for getting us on that roll and maintaining it, having us play some decent football in the process. After the off-season blunders I figured this season would be a step backwards. As the season progressed the club seemed to implode on itself and his baffling in-season decisions were a major contributing factor, compounded by his foolhardy off-season decisions.

It's a cliche in North American sports, not sure if so overseas, but it's a lot easier to change one manager than 25 players.

I still dun get it. What's an extra wheel got to do with handle bar? One steers. the other gives speed/traction.
Don't think you're being ironic so it's just a lousy analogy. End.
