notwithstanding the jovial nature of this thread, it is telling that a moderate forum like ours still engages in partly homophobic jibes which sort of reinforcess the point about football not being ready for an active footballer coming out. just saying!

purely nah.

If a mate of mine was gay, I'd well rip him for it

Same as I do for my diabetic mate, my mate with 1 kidney and my dyslexic mate.

Same way they rip me for being handsome

Same way would be if they were ripping you for fucking in the front hole.

There's no question the world of football is homophobic. There's been a lot of change on this social issue very quickly, and football is a lagging indicator because its an old boys club.

Rip his bum hole for it?

A gay player gives you much more leverage in getting the other team charged with a breach of rule E3 or getting their fans banned. Or even the referee.

If I was a manager, and a player refused to inform me he was gay, I'd be pretty angry. I'd take revenge upon them.

I'd have the player dive and feign injury like a bitch all day. The minute the ref tells him to man up or stop being a girl we're ready to roll. How Dantes would roll.

There was a reporter on r5 a while back who said there's load of premiership players who are openly gay to their teammates, manager & even the reporters know them to be gay, but they won't report it as a scoop cos they know it'll be regarded as tasteless & there'll be a backlash.

That's a small step forward in real terms as ten years ago that wasn't the case.

Kids I know in primary & secondary school tell you in a blasé manner their mate is gay & think nothing of it & say they don't get stick for it, so I think attitudes will change further even within footy in the next decade.

Uhmm right.

Advice 1. Don't speak to primary school kids.
Advice 2. Definitely don't speak to them about sexual orientation.

I get a bit tired of journalists who have never been to a football match making lazy assumptions about what goes on. They refer to homophobic chanting although I have never heard a homophobic chant.

Ha. They're relations & in each case it was them introducing their mates or me seeing them & them either explaining that 'he's gay, he's seeing someone in our class' or similar. In one case I asked why my 10 year old sister in laws 11 year old male mate was wearing make up, expecting it to be part of a game. I was a bit taken aback to learn he wore mascara & eyeliner to school & they had to ask him to stop wearing lipstick.

Incidentally his hetero parents are Christians & are very devout, which amuses me greatly.

There was a lad a few years younger than me in school who used to wear fake tan etc to school. You knew he would be walking along the corridor by the sounds of the insults being fired at him.

It seems as if children are much more sexually aware than we were when I were a lad. When I was 10 I still thought girls were soppy and of course I was completely oblivious to the concept of gayness. 😀

Wait what? Hold on aren't you related to Windever right? Pedro? I see

I wore blue eyeliner to school once during my week long flirtation with New Romaticism. I thought I was David Sylvian.
