BRAZEN thieves stole hundreds of pounds worth of gadgets from a school gym – as police chiefs watched a play on crime just yards away.
Former assistant Chief Constable Helen King, other high ranking officers, and Lord Mayor Frank Prendergast were visiting Broadgreen International School when the theft took place.
Thieves riffled through belongings in the school gym while the performances were taking place and walked out with an iPad and an MP3 player.
Each year schools take part in the Act Together project to produce 10-minute dramas on crime and anti-social behaviour.
Richard Burniston, 62, of Woolton whose son Matthew, 14, from Gateacre Comprehensive was performing, had his blazer and MP3 player stolen. The gadget was worth about £80, and the blazer £25.
He said: “I found it quite ironic at such an event with so many policeman present.
“It was quite a sight watching the chief inspector searching the bins outside the school in the dark with his torch in the hope the thieves had deposited items there.
“Needless to say quite upsetting for some of the children losing their stuff at an event where they were trying to help the community.”
