Thiago.... Ja ????

He looked handy, obviously, but it's already doing my head in the bumming he's getting from media, pundits and fans. Decent showing. That completed passes stat is an example of what I'm on about. Just watch the game and give it the "eye test".

It's like the way everyone was saying James Rodriguez was "sensational" after an alright display in his debut against Spurs.

He's been playing professional football for twelve years and won the league in eleven of them. Have we ever bought as high a profile player? I don't remember it.

Who cares. Just point out that regardless he's still one of the best midfielders in the world. And set a new record in the 2nd for completed passes.

Maybe but as a Deep lying Midfielder he probably has a higher chance of giving away penalties than the attacking players would so im not too miffed..it happenes to all players now and again. Im more intrested in what they think about Thaigo having a PL record for the most passes on a 45min debut...

Urgh

What an attack vector we have now from the defensive positionss...Full back are dangerous, VVD long-range passing is dangerous and now centrally we probably have one of the best central (defensive) midfield passers in the world. This season is going to be fun!

To be fair City fans and other fans haven't made a big deal about the penalty most rival fans seem depressed about the thought of Thaigo playing for us lol

Not that I ever remember. I guess Ian Rush was our signing of a player with the most titles? I'm not counting Morientes

Markus Babel, maybe?

If the criteria is successful player from a top club in Europe that is still wanted by said club but leaves to join us.

Think it was obvious how we can push one of the CMs further forward with Thiago there in control of passing from the middle. Expect to see lots more if that with Naby or Gini the most advanced although I’d prefer to see Taki there.

Kenny Cunningham explaining why Thiago is a 3rd choice number 6

He raises a valid point, Thiago isnt a tackler in the way that Fabinho is so he is unlikely to play as the sole DM but will require a shift in formation which probably sees one of Hendo/Wijnaldum miss out in favour of an attacking midfielder.

The risk with any change is that you break a winning formula however its clear Klopp had to evopve the team as we had played the same way for too long and teams had begun to blunt our attacking strategy. I dont think Thiago will start every game, but he should be starting in matches where we expect the opposition to try and set up to limit space for our fullbacks or drop into a low press.

Look at how quickly he moves the ball in midfield compared to our other midfielders.

Former Liverpool midfielder Murphy believes the 29-year-old, who came through Barcelona’s La Masia academy, is the closest thing to Barca and Spain icon Xavi in terms of his efficient recycling of the ball.

‘He moves the ball so quickly, he doesn’t dwell on the ball even when other players aren’t around him,’ Murphy told BBC Match of the Day 2.

‘In midfield you can get in a comfort zone when playing against less men where you take one, two, three, four [touches], he’s just one, two, very Barcelona-like, that’s where he was educated, of course.

‘He is the nearest thing to Xavi, that’s why he didn’t get in the team, obviously, they had [Andres] Iniesta and [Sergio] Busquets. ‘His awareness and quickness of passing and variation of passing is going to add more quality to that Liverpool midfield.’

Following the debate re. Thiago on RC is quite interesting. There are maybe 8 Germans involved including 4 BM fans.
Specifically they mention how his defensive game has improved since 2018 and how he’s topped a few BL midfielder season defence stats.
The defensive side of his game seems to be under-valued on 6CM.

To me - when he was coming up at Barca - he always seemed more akin to Iniesta due to his close control and dribbling ability.

I'm not convinced it is, it's just that we have Fabinho who's one of the best in the world in that area. I think a lot of us would prefer to see Thiago play in front of Fabinho, in the same way Keita often does, sure he can play the number 6 role exceptionally well when Fabinho is elsewhere, but certainly for me, my favourite midfield includes both Fabinho and Thiago, with Fabinho at number 6.

It isn't a comparison with Fabs. I agree, he'd always be my first choice at DM. It's that people tend to think of him as a passing machine, which comments in this thread only emphasise, without regard for his defensive contribution.

As far as midfield contribution to our defence is concerned: Fabinho, Thiago & Keita have outstanding statistics.

Poor guy, they really wring the social media juices out of you first day.

I only watch the videos to see the first klopp hug, where is it?

I’m searching the web for Thiago clips as I really hadn’t watched much of him over the years. He really is amazing. Thought this video analysis was very interesting. Love how he feels no pressure when receiving the ball deep in his half surrounded by opposition players. Absolutely classy.
