The wobble

In December we’ve only won 2 games by more than one goal. That was the derby 4 weeks ago and against the woeful Newcastle.

We have struggled. Is this the wobble every team goes through? Is it worse?

The traditional front 3 have been shite. Firmino has been injured but Mané and recently Salah have been shocking.

What do we change? Do we hope Thiago actually plays 5 consecutive games? Mané plays into form when representing his country?

I think the league is a real long shot and maybe we need to plan for balls deep in the European cup.

Look at the bigger picture.

We're still creating hatful of chances, it'd be concerned if we weren't creating and conceding a hatful....today we conceded 1 shot on our goal.

On another day Salah scores the pen and we probably go on to win comfortably....Spurs away on form under Conte is a tough game, we can't
just turn up and expect to win....a point playing with 10 for 10-15 mins is a good result,

Wolves away, have the best defensive record in the league bar City....we found a way to win, what more do you want?

Why does winning 1-0 comfortably constitute to us "struggling" because we didn't score 2..3...4?

We're joint top scorers, we have a +34 GD.....it feels like unless we don't have a perfect record with the perfect performances people will have something to nit pick about.

In football you often live and die by the quality of your finishing and when the forward line is sharp it can paper over problems elsewhere and when it’s not even dominant performances can turn into defeats. It’s a somewhat uncomfortable thought, because often clinical finishing and sharpness in the final third is something that comes and goes and it’s often not possible to definitively know why. Why did Harry Kane score only 3 times all season? Why did Sebastian Haller suddenly turn into a monster finisher? Why did Salah become so quiet in the past couple of games after tearing up the league for most of the season? How did Mane miss that chance?

Sometimes there is no answer (or you can come up with a plausible-sounding explanation that could be actually completely wrong - sometimes it’s just the law of averages at work) - you just have to work through it, keep creating chances and try to catch the lightning in the bottle again. Our finishing was extraordinary vs Everton in particular and made the scoreline look a lot more emphatic than the performance deserved; today it was the opposite.

It was one of those weird performances where nobody looked that arsed. There's been a few lately. Just gotta hope they get some urgency back in time for the CL kicking off again in 6 weeks. And it's probably worth trying to beat Arsenal now, just to get some silverware again.

Oh, and hard as it is to believe, City will have their “wobble” too at some point. We just have to be in the striking distance when that happens - but that’s obviously a very difficult task. Chelsea game is almost a must-win now.

It points to a downwards trend. We are no longer making clear cut chances. We had a missed pen and 1 other from Mané. Wolves we missed an open goal then needed a 95th minute winner. Villa we needed a pen and may have got lucky not giving one away. Spurs tore us apart at times despite the fact they shouldn’t have had XI on the pitch.

Could Chelsea get beat by us then beat city?

BTW I have to say we missed Origi more than anyone else today. We would have not blanked had he been available; this was exactly the type of game a “proper” CF in the last half an hour can help.

@King Binny, do you have the XG difference stats for our games by any chance? Would be interesting to see if there is actually a downward trend in terms of creating chances. Visually, I don’t think so.

It’s a blip. I’m more concerned about what happens when we lose Salah and Mané

Completely agree with this - in the “best league in the world” it should be normal for a title challenging team to lose or draw an away game once in a blue moon (pun not intended). Our frustration is not with this team, which is still pretty damn awesome despite today’s result, but with City making a complete mockery of the rest of the league.

I bet Klopp is once again feeling like he’s in charge of Dortmund desperately trying to compete with Bayern, where many of the Bundesliga teams sh*t themselves against Munich even before they step on the pitch - but give everyone else a good go.

I just read "Bring the Noise", reminding me that every great team has it's wobbles. Even every Klopp team. We just have no margin of error in this league given the problem of financial doping.

Too much optimism in here.

We’ll lose to the chavs.
Drop more points when the AFCON lads leave.
Get knocked out of the cups.
And be out of the title race by Feb.
And Bobby to score a goal. Just the one.

3rd place at best is the verdict.

Only a null and void can stop the mancs from running away with the title.

We should focus on the League Cup if we want to win a trophy this season.

Wow, such fucking woosies. Did people really think we'd go a whole season with losing 1 game? The reality is City have an immense squad and are doing what they do every season, and that's go on a 10-15 game winning run. We get our perennial wobble in Dec/Jan. The Owners need to stop being cunts and start loosening the purse strings.

The thing is though - unless the owners are going to personally guarantee or fund the spending, then “loosening the purse strings” could very well ruin us.

It’s really only City & Utd that have significantly higher net spends - everyone else, Chelsea included, sell to fund.

If we want to spend a fortune then we’ll have to sell - and I don’t mean fringe players - we’ll need to sell someone that’ll bring in the £££’s.

For that we’ll need to look at sellling Mane, Virgil, Salah or Trent. Might get decent coin for Jones or Harvey due to age and the other assets that would return good fees are Allison, Robbo, Fabinho & Jotta.

No-one else is going for over £30m - most would fetch under £20m.

So unless we have a whole host of kids ready to fill out the first team squad... we ain’t buying much unless we sell someone highly regarded.

Many ways to read these stats, but one way would be to say that if our XG is over 2.50 we win the game, if it's below 2.50 we do not. Something was off in the Leicester game, like Klopp said, even though we had the better chances. Don't think Spurs and Leicester games alone are enough to talk about a "trend," other than to say that we are worse off, once again, when Thiago and Fabinho are not starting in midfield together.

I doubt borrowing £60m would ruin us. I have no issues selling,
Mane or Bobby would be reluctant sales but I'd first look to sell Gomez (£25m), Ox (£15m), and Kieta (£25m) followed by mini (£15m).
That's £80m from sales there, plus borrow £60m. That's £140m. About £30m will go on agent fees and golden handshakes leaving £110m on players.

I was saying in the pub that noone looked like they were arsed. After 30 minutes we didn't look like scoring and them scoring was hardly against the run of play

Sometimes it's good to get a kick up the ass, and if we hand Chelsea theirs on a plate I'll take it

I'm not sure they will. The standard signs for them every season is a comparatively slow start and then a very consistent middle. I don't see them dropping a single point until February

Yep. Law of averages. Or Sod's Law. It was going to happen sometime. Mo's scoring/assisting run coming to an end, Mo's 15 straight pens equaling the record always meant a miss/save was coming, Schmeichel's superb save from Mo ... with his bloody thumb ! Mane continuing his missing run. Leicester's 3rd home win on the bounce - their first for years. Rodgers' 50th win. First time we have failed to score in 29 Premier League games.

Everything comes to end some time no matter how well/poorly you play. Sometimes fate conspires against you. No matter how poorly we played, to our standards, we still should have won, 21-6 shots, 12-1 corners, 63% possession. Sigh.

City's most difficult away games in the second half of the season:

Arsenal
Wolves
West Ham

They play all the other "top" teams at the Etihad.
The title race is over unless Man C suddenly starts looking like a normal team.
