So, people suggesting we play a different team in the cups, and I'd imagine that this will demand differing formations to make it work with the new personnel. Lay it out here chaps.

Alisson

Clyne
Matip
Lovren
Moreno

Hendo
Fabinho/Gini
Shaqiri
Lallana/Jones

Studge
Origi

It would be pure madness to risk starting Sturridge for a bunch of cup games. Same with Alisson. Grabara and Markovic should take their places.

The (domestic) cup competitions are usually the games where we could give the fringe players a game and see how they fare. The draw against chelsea is awful as it means we will have to play a good team to progress.

------------------------------ Mignolet (no point being an arse and not playing him at all - could backfire if we need him)

Clyne----------------Matip-----------Dejan------------Moreno

-----------------------------Hendo / Fabinho (whoever is not getting many starts)

----------------------- Jones -----------Hendo / Gini / Keita (whoever didn't start the last game)

--------------------------------Lallana

----------------Shaq------------------------Sturridge

Also Kelleher, Origi, Camacho, Solanke, Philips, Chirivella and Markovic competing for the bench.

Ox & Brewster when they return !

Is it called the special cup team because it's comprised of the spastics that don't make the usual team?

For the first season in I don't know when, I think we can dip into the wider squad and actually find quality.

It genuinely feels like we could put together a second choice XI that would challenge for European places in the league in its own right if it stayed fit.

I don't remember having a second string that'd be involved in anything other than a relegation battle before.

Not sure i'm up for seeing 100% rotation in cups

----------------Alisson---------------- (realistically we know Ming will start)
Clyne---Matip----Lovren---Moreno
----------------Fabs---------------------
------Lallana---------Hendo/Gini/Milner/Keita------ 1 of these chaps that isn't playing the next game
Shaqiri------Firmino------Studge-- I'd also rotate either Firmino or Salah with the front 2.

In short I think we will always want 1 of our key players from CM and Attack playing, if not more. Not so bothered by defence.

I reckon that's a belter of the front 3. I'm going to use 'special team' more in the Am. football understanding. I'll use your version after they lose.

City have an easy draw and so you can see the likes of foden getting a game but i would be surprised if he do the same against chelsea.

Always good to use less important competitions as a way to involve fringe players, or those coming back from injury, and I'd also like to see some of the promising younger players get games, assuming we haven't loaned them all out.

It's a bit random, I know, but isn't this a terrific pic? It just says all that you hope to see between a manager and a young player. Real warmth and encouragement, real rapport.

I don't want Markovic anywhere near the pitch, ever

He’s not in the EPL or UCL squads so I doubt he’s ever going to get a game again. He’ll be lucky to get a game with the U23s

What a waste of talent

On the topic of squads, man it's depressing to see that Ox didn't make the CL squad. I know that it wasn't a real surprise but damn it would have been nice to have him fit this season.

It would be madness not playing Studge into some kind of form in case we really need him come the pointy end of the season. The odd 5 or 10 minutes in league games won't be enough. The thing about Studge is that he, as far as I can remember, doesn't ever get injured in games. The bugger gets injured in training. Play him! Play him I say!

He’s gotten injured after scoring a goal though..

Yes, he never seemed to have an extraordinary amount of talent.

To not even make the squad is damning. He's either utterly shit, totally lazy, or a complete plank. Or more likely all three.

How, with a name like Lazar, is he not awesome? This I will never understand
