What success have Newcastle had?

None this season (or ever), who knows how long this resurrection will last either. Thats not the question though is it? On a meagre budget, with little investment they've managed to over perform this year, getting 'lucky?' with player buys.

What i would like to know is, how does the LFC funding set them up for the financial fair play rules? Will the likes of Chelsea, Tottenham and Liverpool be able to enter the Champions league, or does the entry go down the table to the next team who does qualify?

I think they've bought exceptionally well and if they were going to fall away, they'd have done so by now. They picked us off well at the weekend without really overexerting themselves. They play good football, have flair and quality where it matters and generally defend quite well.

The first thing they did right was to start completely disregarding the views of their own fans.

That's a good point, didn't they get the money from Carroll and wait until the next window to sign Ba? Unlike us who sold Torres and appeared to make the most amazing panic buy to replace him. A big part of that had to be to keep the fans happy, surely there was no way he was our first choice at that price. Ashley already had a shit relationship with the fans and so probably didn't care about them, but it seems to have worked.

Doesn't it also sound a little bit like how Arsenal operate, ignore fan discontent, pick the right players up at the right price and fill in the gaps with kids. They've been wanting Wenger to spend big for years but he hasn't, maybe that's why.

they have simply had luck on their gambling with signings. If you sign 6 players and 3 are quality you have done well, they have exceeded that and even got their top scorer for fuck all.

Clubs go through spells of successful and shit signings based on a bit of a punt, they are on the high side at the mo.

Their future now is all about staying off the sharks that will be coming for their players in August

But at least they gambled - not gone down the tried and tested route especially when it turns out most of those players have never been tried nor tested in the first place. Thus you may as well take a punt now and again.

Things are pretty bad, but they hopefully never be so bad that we need to look to Newcastle as a model. They'll probably fall apart again next year.

I don't know. Selling mediocre players for exorbitant sums and then buying far superior ones for much less seems like a pretty sound model to me.

Their gamble were pretty calculated ones too. Cisse had been doing well for the past 3 seasons, averaging a goal every other game in the Bundesliga. Yohan Cabaye was a mainstay in the increasingly successful Lille team. Demba Ba's strike rate with West Ham and cost meant he was worth a punt too, even with the clause he apparent has in his contract, esp. at a time when they were lacking quality striking options. Cheick Tiote was probably the biggest find, but he was already a 'veteran' to some extent, having played 3 full seasons of top flight Dutch football by his early 20s and being part of the FC Twente title winning team.

Makes one wonder how much discussion goes on with and amongst our scouting network and how maximized it is.

They have successfully improved their team in a short space of time using only resources generated from transfers.

What is it ?

I know most people expect them to fall away at some point during the season, I know I do anyway, but it wouldn't be a massive surprise if they contended for a Europa spot. They seem to have done it by breaking the rules laid down by football's conventional wisdom.

1. They sold their best player.

2. They got rid of proven Premier League players and replaced them with foreign risks.

3. They don't back their manager.

They've gotten significant improvement out of fuck all spending. It'll be interesting to see how they fare over a longer period.

Alan Carr's Dad is one of their chief scouts and he seems to be dong very well for them.

I don't put much of their success down to Pardew and I didn't really with Houghton either. They obviously did good jobs, but it's what's going on behind the scenes which is the real driver here.

The same was probably true at Porto.

We'll see how well they've improved their squad over the next few seasons, one season doesn't make a swallow (or is that song?)

Anyway, I get bored talking about other teams. It seems it's all that's ever discussed on here.

I doubt they'll get 5th so no europe.
they have won no cups.
'success' is a relative term I guess.
