Alberto Gilardino is delighted to get the chance to captain Italy when they face Ukraine in Kiev on Tuesday.

The 28-year-old will lead the line alongside Villarreal striker Giuseppe Rossi.

“Wearing the captain's armband tomorrow is a great present that the national team has given me,†Gilardino smiled.

Asked about the time he has recently spent on the bench for Italy, he said: “There isn't any rivalry here, if anything there is a lot of competition and I believe that this is a good thing for me, for my teammates and for Italy.

Gila Update:

The agent of Alberto Gilardino has rubbished reports of a switch to Paris SG. “Fiorentina have received no bids.”

The Italian international’s future in Florence is in some doubt after links with Genoa, Villarreal and PSG.

“I know Paris SG director Leonardo well,” Beppe Bozzo told RMC. “We did see each other recently too, but we didn’t talk about transfers.

“The only French club who are interested in Gilardino are Marseille,” the representative revealed.

“However, as it stands right now, nobody has made Fiorentina a concrete offer for my client.”

Fiorentina seem to be willing to sacrifice the former Parma and Milan man, but any interested club will have to hand over €15m.
