The new number 9…

Isak is going to have to pull some dirty move to get out of a Newcastle contract with 3 years remaining IMHO.

Very sceptical.

A world record fee goes a long way to solving their PSR issues.

Glorious as their League Cup triumph is for their supporter base, it's not bringing a lot of revenue in.

I've always liked Kulusevski. If I had to pick from the Premier League, he’d be my choice. At just 24, he's two-footed, has a decent shot, a great work rate, and plays with his head up. There’s a lot to like, and you’d imagine he’s looking at players like Son and thinking, I don’t want to finish my career with nothing to show for it.

It's an odd one. All the strikers we've been linked to, the only one I think I can see the club going for is Alvarez, and that's because I think he'll be cheaper than isak, and can play across the front 3

I kinda feel if we wanted Álvarez we would have gone for Marmoush. City went for him as their replacement and he was significantly cheaper last summer and in January than Álvarez will be now.

Might be wrong, but I'd be surprised if both we would pay the big fee Atletico will want and he would be so quick to cut short his time in Spain.

Ekitike looks promising but so fucking awkward on the ball. It'd be like having Joel Matip playing up front.
I fail to see a downside

You are right, but I dunno. Isak would cost the world. Etikite seems potentially a smart bet but the spreadsheet squad put PL experience high on the essentials it seems (at least for a big outlay).
Alvarez left because he wanted to be the main man. He comes to us then he's the main man again, and in a strong position to win more trophies (with respect to atleti of course).

We all know we'll get David and keep Jota, so it's all moot

It might just me being a thoroughly miserable old bastard at this point, but is there a real dearth of not just strikers but exciting forwards of any description right now?

Even on youtube highlights most of the guys I see just look a bit shit.

Yeah the forwards well isn't very deep. The past few years have been a real push towards efficiency rather than exciting players.

Peps legacy to football: make it fucking meh

I think Cunha is the most likely. Reasonable fee, release clause, Premier League proven, can play multiple positions.

Alvarez will cost similar to Isak. Atletico will want serious wedge for him after one season.

All of that is true, but his discipline problems will count against him and rightly so. If we are after him we'll really need to do our due diligence.

We have a mixed record with talented but ill disciplined South American strikers in our past. Suarez being the obvious example of success. But I think Cunha has shown the ability on the pitch more than Nunez has.

For me, what counts against Cunha besides his horrible on-pitch temparament is that a lot of his goals this season are wonder strikes from outside the box - statistically those are the hardest to replicate consistently and these types of goals are the most likely to dry up. And if they do, all you’ll be left with is a not very fast, not physically dominant, not defensively excellent player who is also a walking red card.

I think our data team looks at these things very carefully - one of the reasons for us bringing in the likes of Mane and Jota was the areas from where they created chances (as close to goal as possible, which means it’s sustainable) rather than simply the amount. Cunha will not show up well on these metrics.

Interesting take. I haven't looked closely enough at him to assess this but will take your word on it.

I think there's no question Isak is the best finisher potentially available and Alvarez is the best overall or most versatile attacker.

But they'll both be double the price of Cunha, or close to it. I just really can't see us stretching that far, nor do I see a strong argument for Alvarez leaving Atletico after just one year.

Who's not really in the conversation but should be is what I'm wondering.
