The net spend (lizards) thread

They spunked a lot of cash this summer though, spending more than most clubs did this summer.

Look at Spurs and then their current team. That's some astute business and club management they've got going on there.

Yeah that's why the media is sucking their dick despite us being a point behind them. And Arsenal finishing ahead of them every year ever until last year and also only being a point behind them. Young English players, good footy, good finances

If you were a neutral you'd be all over that. I hope they fucking burst

Even Everton have spent more than us over the past five years. Everton. Fucking hell.

And where has that got them?

It's not all about how much; maybe more about how wisely. Unless you have a bottomless pit, then invariably you'll get it right in the end. But still waste a whole fucking lot in the interim.

I'm always skeptical about this stuff.

I mean, what about the seasons where we finished in the top four and then compounded it by spunking millions on absolute shite? What happens then is the knock on effect. A shit season and then your best player(s) wants to leave. Alonso, Torres, Mascherano, Sterling, Suarez, Coutinho (maybe). We've lost and sold big name players because we've been our own worst enemies in the transfer market and on the pitch. They go for big money. I'm not sure that makes us an actual selling club buy choice, but more by self enforced fucking stupidity.

If we have a shit season this time and Coutinho goes and we make the net spend even more meager, who's fault is that? The owners? Or the fact we didn't buy what we needed (a defender or two), which might have given us a chance to change Coutinho's mind, through some actual smart spending resulting in success.

So it's not the owners' fault that we've spent pitifully every window? That's bollocks.

This club makes phenomenal amounts of cash, our revenue has shot up under the new owners yet the net spend hasn't followed suit.

We don't spend enough to attract the best players, & there's only so many players you can unearth at good prices who prove good value, & we arent good enough at it to counter the lack of spending.

There are three teams in this league who should be able to outspend us, three, yet we're not competing with over half the league with our spending power, it's fucking ridiculous.

The point is not ‘spiking millions on absolute shit’.
Our last 5 seasons have shown that we’ve spent a pitiful amount to try and replace the big names that leave. If big names leave and we’re only spending 23m net, what exactly can we be expecting?

Ok, they haven’t spent huge amounts on players but they have invested in infrastructure. The new stand was 114m and that needs to be factored in, doesn’t it?

They’ll get a 100m or so sponsorship deal for the main stand within a year I’d imagine. Would offset the expense by close to the whole amount.

We have huge amounts of revenue, we dont actually make a profit though. I think we lost £20m for the last years published accounts. Our wage bill is ridiculous despite having a weak squad.

Over 1/3 of Evertons net spend came this summer after signing loads of average players.

We've spent more than enough to compete with 400 mill £, we just spent it on the wrong players for a good few years. We've gotten much better at it now mind.

I haven't looked at accounts in years but to add to what you've said we were 40-50m in the red each year for about 3 years before revenues rose.

The wage bill hit 200m at some point and we're doing significant stadium improvements.

So all in all i'm not surprised there hasn't been a massive net spend.

And its hard to say we haven't spent enough when we spent 35m on a sub.

No. It doesn't win you matches, so it doesn't count. Players win you matches, not a fancy new stand, nice as that may be.

There's no point having a fancy new stand when your defence is fucked so you're not going to win a trophy, again.

We're not a business, all this talk of infrastructure investment & long term asset wealth rising etc makes my blood boil, we're a fucking football club, that exists to win trophies, which we haven't done for fucking years. We're currently not in a position to do that because we're not spending enough on quality players to do so, that's on the owners.

Yeah, but the club does need things like new stands. That's the kind of stuff necessary for our long term future. It's not that the money has been tucked into the lizards' back pockets. And whether or not you think we're not a business, we are, and we always have been. There has always been men in suits that sign the cheques for new players, and they need to balance 'the business', whether we like it or not. I'm not saying the situation is perfect, but on the other hand if we add the investment in the club (which we have to do, because the money has been spent from the total budget of the club), and split it over 5 years, then that is at least an extra 120m, so 24 million a year on average (almost exactly mirroring the investment in players). 48m a year investment is larger than everyone in the league other than City and Utd.

We are a business FFF. We don’t exist to win trophies (although they are helpful in promoting the business).
It has been this way for many many years.
