I don't know if we're taking him for granted a little bit. Many doubted how soon he would be able to hit the top levels after the injury or whether he will get there at all. But at least in this game his performance was on par with the best Van Dijk performances I can remember. Razor-sharp decision making, good kind of arrogance, physical domination, concentration from first second to the last. He was caught the wrong side of Daka in the first few minutes and managed to catch up to him in a flash, executing a perfectly timed little "shove" to gently push him off the ball without committing a foul – borderline in terms of rules of the game, but so effective when done right. In the 2nd half there was a moment when Iheanacho (I think) was sent through even though it looked like offside – Van Dijk put on the turbo mode and got between him and the goal by the time the ref's whistle blew. And then of course his movement for the first goal – Ndidi thought he had him and the next moment he was gone, planting his head on a ball with conviction. And Virgil even bailed otherwise imperious Joel on a couple of occasions when Kaiser had a brainfart.

To someone not paying attention, it might have seemed like a straightforward game, but this was only because our defensive 6 made it look that way and snuffed out almost all the fires before they started and Van Dijk was squarely at the heart of it. I don't think the overall standard of defending in the Premier League is all that high at the moment; certainly there are plenty of mediocre and overrated defenders around – so it's great to see amid all that a real master at work and to see that he's on our team.

The BT sport studio were talking to him after the match and it has given me the fear with Virgil. The high line game is a fast man’s game, I really hope he retains his pace for years to come but i dread the day he starts to struggle.

He looked imperious from the bits of the match I saw. The examples you highlighted against Daka and Ihenacho stood out in real contrast to how jaded or slightly off the pace he's looked at times this year.

THIS Virgil is the best centreback in the world.

Is this Matip's best season with us? Will Webster be picked up by a bigger club?

Definitely Matips best season and VVD had gone up a level in February, which had coincided with four or five wins on the bounce.

Interesting that Dias is a bit shit in the air. Hopefully some teams start to exploit that before the seasons end. He is the their CB who's meant to go and attack the ball.

Where are the posters that said we had to worry about Virgil then? 😛

Its taken some time but he is definitely back to his best. Klopp saying the same after the Burnley game.
What a player. Best defender in the World. No doubt.

Selective stats again though isn't it. Just if you win headers and pass it forward. Nothing to do with whether you can tackle or run or get in the right position

I mean Maguire looks good if you use that graph. He's objectively terrible.

Maguire cant even pass the ball forward. He runs with it towards the player that has acres of space and then passes it when he's 2 feet away.
Time and time again. He's an horrendous player.
He can win his aerial duels though. Cause he's tall and has a head the size of satellite dish.

Haha that was my first thought - those stats make Maquire look almost VvD's equal - where's the reality couldn't be further from the truth if you tried.

SOME of us never ever doubted he'd get back to where he was. And now we have to suffer the bandwagon jumpers. Sigh.

Aguero
Kane
Vardy
Lukaku
Ronaldo
Son
Mahrez
Lacazette

Just off the top of my head. All decent goal scorers. Okay, I’m pushing it with this version of Lukaku.
