And in CL:
Lewa
Mbappe
Messi

It’s not our fault we own rest of the legendary strikers like Bobby, Salah and Mane.

Mo and Mane is definitely up with the likes of Shearer and Henry. Bobby up there with Van Persie and Drogba.

You can also reverse the Ballack statement and say those strikers were lucky to play against a dearth of quality 'complete' defenders.

Appart from Rio and Vidic most defenders back then we're good but not great. Yes that includes top class cloggers like John Terry, Woodgate and Carragher.

These days as a defender you got to have speed and ability on the ball. Most of the so called great defenders from back in the day where rubbish with the ball at their feet. The game has completely changed on that front.

Agree with the overall point but not with the descriptions you apply to some players. I'd swap Vidic and Woodgate - Torres' pace and strength destroyed Vidic that time at Old Toilet, while Woodgate was fundamentally top quality (Real Madrid didn't sign him for nothing) but made of biscuits. And Terry was actually decent with the ball at his feet - his problem was pace, or more precisely a total lack of it, which was painfully apparent when he played for England against the best from other countries.

He should try from distance more often, it's low probability but when you are up against an 11 man defence pretty much every attempt is low probability. Same goes for Thiago, when you ha e the technique to shoot from distance it's worth a punt every now and then to keep your opponent honest.

Best defender I have ever seen. You can bring your best all time Italian defender and I will still take VVD.

He has the footballing technique, physique and intelligence. He rarely slide tackles, in fact he must have one of the lowest stats for slide tackling.

Especially against that keeper. He was ridiculous - he punched everything (we were unlucky that his worst punches didn't fall to us in the pen area). I'm surprised he didn't punch his goal kicks too.

Extraordinary all-round footballer, so good overall that Holland actually played him up front quite recently when they had a bit of an injury crisis. For a long time I had Jocky Hansen and Lawrenson as my CBs in the All-Time XI because those two were just peaches and cream together, but Virgil would replace Lawrenson now.
