The Lions

Not a very good performance was it?

On the plus side: Sheridan, Ferris (i'm loving this guy) and Hook all had very good games.

Negatives: O'Callaghan, Powell, Worsley and Fitzgerald have it all to do in order to stand any chance of getting into the test squad.

Shane Williams was once again a liability. When he's on form he is clearly the best winger that the British and Irish Lions have, when he's not he concedes turnover after turnover and constantly chases the game on his own. On this form they can't pick him for the 1st test match.

anyone know of any good lions streams for the tests?

I waatched the match yesterday on Veetle http://www.veetle.com/channelList.php?cat=80which transmits Setanta USA ( among other sports channells) pretty much constantly.
I would assume that the test matches will be on here and the quality is normally very good to excellent.
You will need to download the veetle player but that only takes a few minutes.

Largely agree, but not about Worsley. No way is he a no.7 - he was pressed into service there late on because of (Martyn) Williams' injury. At 6 he's a human threshing machine and the Lions would be total fools to leave that out of the reckoning for the Tests, which is why I don't think they will.

This isn't the team i would pick, but this is what i think is most likely at this stage:

Jenkins
Mears
Murray
O'Connell
AW Jones
Ferris
Williams
Heaslip
Phillips
Jones
Monye
BOD
Roberts
Bowe
Byrne

As always seems the case on Lions tours, i'm expecting D'arcy, Hook and Croft to also feature in the test match squad as well.

I thnk that's probably pretty close to the side which would be picked if the First Test were scheduled for tomorrow, but there are a few games to go yet. I think both England props are in the mix for a place (Murray didn't take his chance yesterday, for me) and Martyn Williams may be seen as just not quite hefty enough to take on the Boks' back row.

Yeah i know it could all change pretty quickly mate.

Sheridan looked very good yesterday and i agree that Vickery could easily force his way into the starting XV. I wouldn't play Williams either, I'd prefer to see Ferris at 7.

Who plays 7 is going to be interesting. I think Ferris and Heaslip are nailed on for starting spots but who plays seven will probably tell us a lot about our gameplan

This looks potentaily very close!

British and Irish Lions:

Lee Byrne
Shane Williams
Brian O'Driscoll
Jamie Roberts
Luke Fitzgerald
Ronan O'Gara
Mike Phillips
Gethin Jenkins
Lee Mears
Adam Jones
Alun-Wyn Jones
Paul O'Connell
Tom Croft
David Wallace
Jamie Heaslip

Replacements: Matthew Rees (Scarlets/Wales), Phil Vickery (London Wasps/England), Simon Shaw (London Wasps/England), Joe Worsley (London Wasps/England), Mike Blair (Edinburgh/Scotland), Riki Flutey (London Wasps/England), Leigh Halfpenny (Cardiff Blues/Wales).

I can't help but think O'Connell is playing the next game for only one reason. He doesn't need to play, he's got nothing to prove - but both times he's skippered the side they haven't been all that impressive (and I don't think that's his fault) but the time in between they hammered the Golden Lions while BOD was captain. If they go out and stick 50 points on the SHarks on Wednesday under BOD then I think the captaincy debate would be a popular topic in the media.

I was wondering about this along exactly the same lines. Glad it isn't just me.

McGeechan is far too clever not to see the risk of it.

There are a few blogs on the Irish Times websites - one from a fan on the Lions tour, one from a journo on the LIons tour and one by Tommy Bowe. Bowe's is worth a read, it's nothing sensational but it gives you a little bit of insight as to what has been going on.

The journo blog noted last week that Andy Powell is a taking a bit of stick for getting his sums wrong and buying a pair of jeans for 320 euro, he thought it was 32 euro.

Bowe's blog:
http://www.irishtimes.com/blogs/lions-bowe/

"On arrival at the hotel, we were greeted by a traditional South African song and dance performed in front of the hotel - certainly different to the type of moves I would be pulling on the dance floor. My new roommate Mike Blair, or ‘Blade’ as he likes to be known, has been doing his best to copy them in front of the mirror….naked."

Haha. He probably thought he saw the word "ewe" and lost it there and then. 😉

Re your previous post, there's a risk either way though, isn't there? McGeechan and O'Connell have to make sure a pattern doesn't develop, and it's not entirely in their hands to do so.

JJ Williams was on Irish radio last night talking about the Lions, he said the most disappointing thing about the tour thus far was Andy Powell's performance.

The other contributors mused that it looked like he was one of those guys who because he was physically stronger than those around him while coming through the ranks didn't see the need to develop his all round game because the strength gave him a massive advantage. But now that he's at the top the game and everyone is able to cope with it he's being found out as an extremely limited player.

Thoughts Rafa ?

Firstly I'd be very surprised indeed to find out that you have not exaggerated those comments.

Its utter shite regardless anyway Rosco, he's allready had stand out performances against the 3 best sides in world rugby(I've never seen a Irishman put in a single performance like Powell has against all 3 of the Tri nations teams either i might add). He has also hugely impressed on numerous occasions against other international 8's at regional level (HC), So that just proves that nobody has found him out, and even "if" they have, they haven't managed to cope with him.

You might not rate Powell as a WC 8 Rosco, but there are many people who do (inc Gatland, IM, Edwards, Davies, Rush, Guscott, Woods, Butler, McCaw, Young the list just goes on and on and on).

As for him being the biggest disappointment on tour so far, then along with Williams I'd actually agree with that, mainly because so much was expected from them both. I mean if you are just looking at poor performances from individuals so far, then clearly Earls has put in the worst showing to date.

Ferris is out of the tour apparently. Ryan Jones has been called up to replace him. (Cue family squabble between our Welsh friends on here. 😉)

Halfpenny out of the upcoming Sharks game.

Thats a double whammy, not only are we losing a key player, but we've replaced him with Ryan Jones!!

I'm surprised that RJ got called up TBH, he took a heavey blow to the head on Saturday and had to come off shortly afterwards (last i heard he was going to have to have a scan).

I must confess i wasn't a big admirer of Ferris, but the lad really impressed me with his early showings (i hope its nothing too serious).

Losing Ferris is a big blow, he's one of a few players in the pack that I'd back in a one on one encounter with one of the Boks. Him, Sheridan and O'Connell are the main three really. Croft looks most likely to benefit from this injury I think.

It's a bad end to what's been an impressive season for Ferris, but he'll get another chance.

Rafa, the comments I posted about Powell were all genuinely made on Irish radio. I do love winding you up about him though.

I've corrected it for you Rosco.

Yeah I've figured that out, allthough as much as i try to not let it get to me, 9 times out of 10 it does (bastard).

Powell for 6 anyone?

I don't know Rafa , he got stopped easily every time he got the ball in his last game. And if he's not breaking tackles he's not worth much to a team.

It's not going to work anymore Rosco.

Leave it a day or so and i'm sure i'll bite again.

I don't like the idea of having Croft and Williams as our flankers in the test team. We'll get bullied to fu*k if those two play together.

Even though Wallace hasn't been that impressive I think he's slightly ahead of Williams in the pecking order for the Test side.

Incidentally what did you make of McGeechans comments about it being likely that the Test XV probably won't have started a game together prior to the first test ?

I'm very concerned about it TBH.

The backs don't worry me so much due to the combinations in place, but the forwards should have definitely had a run out together as a pack. It'll be interesting to see how the lineout goes in particular.
