The Lions

Looks like Ireland have found ROG's successor in the ten shirt too.

The Leinster backrow were terrific today , Jennings is an incredibly busy player , Heaslip got the all important try and Rocky Elsom was Rocky Elsom.

Yeah- was delighted for Leinster. I agree about the number 10. I hope to see him in a green shirt very soon.

He was excellent yesterday wasn't he?

Thats only the second time I've seen him, but he looked the complete player in the final.

There's now talk of Paterson being called in to tide the Lions over until Halfpenny flies out.

I thought Paterson might get in the original party, for his kicking if nothing else.
I could be wrong mate, but i thought that Hook was the named replacement for Halfpenny.

I'm always a bit "meh", when it comes to Paterson. Yeah great kicker, but is there anything else to his games these days?

Yes he was nerveless. Kind of like ROG used to be 10 years ago.

Wheres he been Doc? He's 23 and only played a few games in the HC. It looks like he's got the added bonus of having a decent frame on him too.

*whispers*

His tacking wasn't shabby either.

He's been playing for Leinster for a couple of years now. He's come to prominence a bit more this season, but Contempomi was still in his way up until a couple of weeks ago.

Contepomi is off in the summer though, so Sexton will get his opportunity.

Cheers Rosco.

Special mention for Rocky Elsom who was simply superb again.

I watched the bulls play yesterday, and if you ever needed anymore evidence that the lions have to play a big, physical and mobile backrow in order to win, then this was the game to see.

I love Martyn Williams, but it will be a mistake if he starts.

Yeah I think so too.

I wouldn't be surprised if they put Ferris at 7 for the tests, he's not a typical 7 by any stretch but he'd match up well against the Boks.

Croft didn't look up to much yesterday, I'd be worried about him out there.

Croft got out muscled so many times yesterday it was unreal, hopefully they'll just use him for the lesser games.

I mentioned in the other Lions thread (i think) that I'd play Ferris at 7.

I know you don't agree, but I'd go for a backrow of:

Heaslip
Powell
Ferris.

Neither Worsley or Wallace are good enough with ball in hand for me.

Our pack i think will be fine when it comes to the scrum and the lineout, but it is definitely short on big physical ball carriers.

Powell has allready laid down a marker against this very same SA pack with a MOTM performance earlier in the season. He smashed over the gain line and put in some monster hits in that match.

Primarily Heaslip and Powell, with back up from Jenkins and O'Connell, should just about cover this area IMO.

Well soon find out anyway, the first game is this Saturday.

When was the last time you watched Wallace ? Ball carrying is the best part of his game.

I've seen Wallace play many times, but for me he's not close to the same class as Heaslip or Powell in this area.

Well considering your constant negative comments about Powell (that have been proven to be wrong), it doesn't surprise me that we don't agree on this.

We'll have to wait and see who's picked and how they go i guess.

What was I proven wrong on ?

He had an awful 6 Nations (how many times was he taken off again ?), he couldn't cope defensively with the French back row how the hell do you suppose he'll stop a Springbok back row ?

He limped out of the Irish game with a questionable calf injury before kick off , he seemed fine 24 hours later sprinting up Mary Street for a taxi after a piss up.

Powell simply doesn't do enough to warrant a place in a top pack. He's one of the reasons Wales were poor this year Rafa, can you not see that ? He plays his own little game to the detriment of the team overall. He's got no tactical nous, no defensive ability , no cop on about how to follow the ball around the park. He wanders around and runs a bit every now again when he gets ball in hand. He's a very god ball carreir, but there's a lot more to being a good forward than being able to run. He simply hasn't got any of the other abilities.

Thats shockingly wrong Rosco.

He played against the full SA pack just before the 6 nations and was the MOTM, so i think he's allready proven categorically that he can cope just fine against them.

+

In your words he had a "awful 6 nations", yet he was picked for the Lions squad that was primarily picked on current form?

Nearly everyone out there (except you) see's that Powell is more than worthy of his place on this tour, and many think he is a very good shout for a starting place. You were claiming that Ryan Jones was a better number 8 at the start of the international season, yet according to the Welsh management, Ospreys coaches and now IM, this is not the case.

If you asked any rugby fan who was the better ball carrier out of Wallace and Powell, then the vast majority would say Powell by some distance.

I'm sorry Rafa but if you think Powell had a good Six Nations or was a form pick you're sadly mistaken. He burst on the scene with a MOTM performance against the Boks, but everyone knows about him now and he's easily taken care of. You need more than just strength at the top level of the game. Parisse, Harinordiquay and Heaslip were all superior to him in the Championship.

Ryan Jones is and always will be a superior player to Powell, he just looks out of shape at the moment. And he has had some nasty injuries.

Most commentators noted that of all the potential stars out there, Powell was the one whose reputation fell the most during the Championship.

Here's an article in which your fellow countrymen recognise that:

For what it's worth I'd have taken him on tour, but I wouldn't be thinking of playing him unless it's off the bench in a Test that we're behind in and need a bit of a spark.

Let's see what he does on tour.

We are never going to agree on this Rosco, so like you said, lets just wait and see how he goes.

In 2-3 days we should see the first Lions side announced, i wonder how strong a team we'll opt for for the opening game?

Very hard to predict IMO. On the one hand you'd like at least some of the Test XV to get some game time in, but on the other hand you know the provincial sides will be looking to crock as any Lions as they can. Starting off with a win is always a help if possible though, so I don't think it'll just be a straightforward midweek side.

Some have flown out later as well i think mate, so we can count those lads out.

The team we are facing has around 8 players with super 14 experience, so it shouldn't be that strong a side we're up against.

I've got the feeling that some of these games could be quite tasty, i just hope we don't lose many players through injuries.

So do I, but that's exactly what the provincial sides will be out to make happen. Methinks we're going to need the spirit of Willie John's party ("99" and all that) back again.

You may think I'm just trying to bait you over this, but I really do wish they'd taken Lewsey. Warriors like him are going to be at a premium out there.

O'Connell has been saying all the right things in that regard so far. I hear he's room sharing with Shane Williams (i hope the little man doesn't snore!!)

I haven't seen enough of Lewsey this season to really comment mate, but by all accounts he hasn't exactly been good enough for Wasps this season has he?
Good enough to be on stand-by for the tour. For me they should have gone one step further and taken him along.
Ah, i really didn't realise that he was picked as one of the back up players. Well mate in that case you might just get your wish soon enough.

15 Lee Byrne, 14 Tommy Bowe, 13 Keith Earls, 12 Jamie Roberts, 11 Shane Williams, 10 Ronan O'Gara, 9 Mike Blair; 1 Andrew Sheridan, 2 Matthew Rees, 3 Adam Jones, 4 Simon Shaw, 5 Paul O'Connell, Joe Worsley, 7 Martyn Williams, 8 Andy Powell.
Replacements: 16 Lee Mears, 17 Phil Vickery, 18 Alun-Wyn Jones, 19 Stephen Ferris, 20 Mike Phillips, 21 Stephen Jones, 22 Riki Flutey.

I particularly like the look of the back five in the scrum.  O'Connell and Shaw are both guys who'll positively enjoy the physical challenge, at the line-out particularly, while Worsley is the Lions' equivalent of Mascherano, a beast in defence who will allow those Welsh back row lightweights to come the Flash Harry going forward. 😉

I'm sure that Powell and Williams will take Worsley under there wings mate 😉

A decent team named, that should have more than enough to get us off to a flying start.
