The Lions

Gatland picked him every time he was fit even though it meant that Ryan Jones didn't play at his 1st choice position + Gatland an Co would have had a decent enough say in terms of who got selected for this tour. But hey we'll have to agree to disagree on this mate.

The SA's start as huge favourites according to the bookies, but I've got a feeling that our boys have a great chance out there.

I'm a little concerned with our hooking options and one of either O'Gara or Jones really need to be on top of there games.

I'm a bit surprised Ford from Scotland didn't get in as one of the hookers - I know they've gone on form, and Mears is actually in excellent form, but even so I'd have thought him a tad on the small side for S.Africa. A lot will depend on the props (it always does out there), for which fortunately I think we're quite well served. Jenkins and Murray are in pole position but the English boys will mount a very strong challenge for those test places.

I also agree that no.10 is a bit tricky. Like you I'm not a big fan of O'Gara but TBH the Lions have also had better than Stephen Jones in that position before now, and there aren't many other backs in the party who can cover out-half if another option is needed. Again the questions to be asked in one position throw the spotlight on another, in this case the back row, who'll really need to get in amongst the SA halfbacks - and will have to get past the SA back row to do it. There's bound to be some tasty stuff going on there.

Can't wait. 8)

It's a very good squad, with a couple of surprising selections for me. I'd be confident they'll give the Boks a great test series.

I agree with JJ, I thought Peel would have gone, Blair being the third scrum half. But Ellis and O'Leary going just shows how focused the management are on the physical element of the battle.

As for the hookers, there is so little to choose between them that I wouldn't have been surprised had they taken Best or Ford instead of one of the other three. The props are pretty much what I would have taken - Horan and Hayes are poor scrummagers and would have got taken apart on this tour.

Second row - AW Jones dirtied his bib a little for me in the game against Munster. He was awful, and not too clever either. I think O'Connell gets to shine when O'Callaghan is doing the a lot of the dirty work for him (his workrate is immense) and I'm not inclined to split them. I like the inclusion of Shaw too, he's a tough nut and a surprisingly good ball handler (it's not too long since I remember him being the most creative player in an England backline during games). Is Hines there just to keep Murray company ?

Back Row - I would have taken Jones. He's not on top form, but he's proven himself on Lions tours before and I just think he's got enough of everything to have been a difference maker.

If someone had said four Irish backrowers would go on this tour I'd have had all my money on Leamy, even though he's had a stop start season. Quinlan has had a very good season though and he is the sort of character that would be great to have on tour. Powell is a gamble, I think he's too one dimensional but I can see why you'd have him in the squad. He could be useful to bring off the bench but i don't think he offers enough to warrant a starting spot.

Outhalf - the only mild surprise here is that they've only chosen two. I thought they may have taken Flood becasue he can fill in elsewhere too.

Centres - It's what I would have picked. Perfect balance. Earls is definitely one to watch on this tour. He'll have a hard time making the test team but I think he'll shine.

Wings - I'm a little surprised that Fitzgerald is going, but very pleased too. He could be a great player soon enough. It's said that Williams is struggling for form this year. I've only seen him in international games and the Welsh style of play this year didn't suit wingers, so I'm not concerned about him. Halfpenny is a great little winger and Bowe thoroughly deserves his spot. Some pundits complain that he hasn't got top level pace, but he has been absolutely superb for Ireland in the past year. I love Monye's pace and power and I think he could well make the test team if Williams isn't at his best.

Fullbacks - I thought Armitage would have gone too, I thought he'd have gone instead of Fitzgerald. Byrne and Kearney are obvious choices though.

My XV would be:

1. Jenkins
2. Flannery
3. Vickery
4. O'Callaghan
5. O'Connell
6. Ferris
7. Wallace
8. Heaslip
9. Phillips
10. O'Gara
11. Monye
12. Flutey
13. O'Driscoll
14. Bowe
15. Byrne

I've gone off Kearney a little of late, his form is tailing off a bit since he's been stuggling with injuries. Vickery is in for his ball carrying skills.

Only picking 9 Irish to start then Rosco 🙂 ?

Looking at the team selections so far, its quite clear that we are all still just a tad biased.

just read that.

Not a big deal.

Well the poor guy must be gutted.

I quite like him as a player, i guess it means that Blair gets the call up now.

Or maybe Peel ?

I like him too, but from a Lions point of view it's only a blip. There's plenty of depth at 9.

Peel has got no chance imo Rosco.

He's dropped down to a 3rd choice SH behind the likes of Cooper under Edwards and Gatland recently. I think they'll opt for Blair and then maybe even Care before they even consider DP.

I'm not saying i don't personally rate Peel because i do, it's just that he's obviously not impressed the likes of G&E in some aspect.

Is it because he moved to England ?
That was the obvious reason that everybody originally thought had played a major factor in his dropping down the pecking order.

I suspect that it could be more to do with a certain event that took place between Popham/Peel (that has recently come to light) and the new Welsh Management team.

On unrelated matters Welsh, we know that verbal diarrhoea is a peculiarly Welsh affliction 😛 but there's something of a history of Welshmen turning it to the Lions' advantage in the battle with the Boks. Many years ago, Mervyn Davies was clonked in one game, reportedly shook his head a little to clear it and then said to the offender: "If that's the best you can do, boyo, you'd better go home now." More recently there was Scotty Gibbs flattening Os Du Randt and saying to him: "Get up, you fat b@stard." Who will it be this time? 😉

Tom Shanklin has been ruled out of the lions tour.

So far then:

O'Leary
Shanklin
Quinlan (most likely anyway)

D'Arcy will probably get a call up now
Good shout.

He had a cracker against Munster.

Very good player, he's another guy that can play pretty much anywhere along the backline but he's not the most consistent of players.

He made his debut for Ireland when he was about 19 and played in the back three. He went through a bit of a bad patch then for a few years where he admitted his lifestyle wasn't becoming of a top notch rugby player. He was in danger of being let go at one point.

His career really got back on track one night in Donnybrook when O'Driscoll was out injured. With no real replacement for him they decided to try D'Arcy at 13 and he put in a MOTM performance. Since then he's always been in the centre but has to play at 12 because BOD is cemented in the 13 jersey for both Ireland and Leinster.

I thought that his best days were behind him TBH, but he put in such a good performance in the game last weekend that I've been forced to change my mind.

With BOD, Roberts, Flutey and hopefully D'Arcy, we should be well catered for in the centres.

Shame about Shanklin, who would have been in my XV for the first Test if it had taken place the day after the squad was named, but I've always liked D'Arcy as a player and I'm hopeful of the partnership with BOD producing the goods.

Are O'Gara and Jones really the only alternatives at stand off? Poor that. I'm not advocating anyone else but they aren't great.
D'Arcy I like what I've seen but Ireland seem to find him hit and miss. Don't know why. Shanklin is a good centre, will be a miss.
I never agreed with Flutie playing for England, he isn't English. Shouldn't be Lion.

I read an article recently that stated that their are only two outhalves in the squad because they couldn't find a third that deserved a spot. They did want a third but couldn't justify giving a place in the squad to any of the others.

Fair enough Rosco but those two are shit. Why are there no good stand offs available? We're well stocked elsewhere. What happened to Geraghty? He looked good to me.
I'm not a Union fan but he looked a good un.

I thought Geraghty would be a England regular at this stage Larry. He does seem a bit injury prone and that's holding him back a bit.

Flood would have been the best of a bad lot to take as third choice for me.

Flood is as mediocre as the rest. Geraghty is by far the best footballer.

Since I've moved here, God Almighty, the Super 14 is well better than English and Welsh Rugby. The Irish might compete, forwards only.

The only chance the Lions have is expansive Rugby otherwise the Springboks will kill them. I would have picked that English lad at full back.

My worst nightmare is Andy Goode, ha ha. Is he in the squad?

Yes, he has. They could have done better by going for Care or Peel IMO.

Who would you choose instead of Quinlan JJ?
