Oh and while we're at it George Best is one of the most over-hyped footballers of all time.
I see you've kept out of the Mc Bride v Fitzgerald debate (because it doesn't suit your bias).
Is there even a debate there?
Whad thinks there is. And Rosco would have poured scorn on the idea immediately if Fitzgerald was an Ulsterman and McBride was the one from Mexico.

My bias ?

You must have missed my previous comments about Ciaran Fitzgerald. I hate Fitzgerald, absolutely despise the man. I'm delighted he now makes his money as a condom salesman. It's about the measure of him.

And I've never seen much of Willie John McBride so I really don't see how I can add anything to the debate.

It is exactly because I know your feelings on Fitzgerald that your silence was telling.

You don't need to have seen much of Willie John McBride, only your Rugby history, to have known he was one of the greatest leaders ever to play the game.

That he wasn't on that list is incredible.

I'm aware of the history alright Doc, but I'm reluctant to rely on it. Fitzgerald gets a rep he doesn't deserve because of one comment caught on camera about showing some pride.

And the reason why McBride is not on the list is because he's British. He accepted an MBE didn't he ?

He was Captain of the fucking Irish rugby team!

This is precisely what I'm talking about, you fucking bigot. I'm British and Irish, as was McBride. You can't fucking deal with that, and that was what I meant by your bias. I mean a sectarian bias. Go fuck yourself.

haha

If he was Irish he couldn't accept the MBE without permission from our Government. I don't think he ever sought it.

EDIT: having checked this out it appears I made a mistake. He doesn't need permission to accept it. However Irish citizens can only get an honorary MBE, whereas British citizens just get an MBE.

Willie John McBride has an MBE, but not an honorary one. It's incompatible with Irish citizenship.

Amazing.

I don't like the bona fide Irish catholic, but when I display indifference to a British/ Irish protestant I'm a bigot.

Clever.

EDIT: btw I didn't make the list, I just provided a possible reason as to why McBride isn't on it.

This turned into a cracking thread.

Lets just give it to DJ Carey and everyone shut the fuck up.

No you're a bigot because you blindly refuse to acknowledge the culture of over a million people who are both British and Irish, and whose Irishness doesn't evaporate through affiliation to Britain.

Your suggestion that McBride somehow lost his Irishness because he received an MBE is either deliberately obtuse (through bigotry) or you're just a stupid cunt with no fucking clue of political identity in Northern Ireland.

I think a little from pot A and a little from pot B.

George Best might be the greatest player the WORLD has ever known, never mind our tiny island, so it's unfair to compare him to anybody.

It's probably fairer to compare Pat Jennings to Roy Keane, maybe... Keane wins. As do practically ALL of our legendary footballers down the years. Irwin. Brady. Whelan. McGrath.

Willie John? Fair shout. But Ciaran Fitzgerald was an inspirational leader and ambassador too.

McGuigan or Collins. Very close call, in my opinion. Both beat the previously unbeatable, stuck around for a while, then faded later in their careers.

Stephen Roche won the f#$!ing Tour d' France. And the World Championship in the same year. Padraig Harrington RETAINED the Open. The North has never produced a footballer the likes of Jack O'Shea or a hurler like Christy Ring. Or either like Jimmy Barry Murphy.

Both sides of the border have their fair share of legends. But to say you "overshadow" us is utter gash.
Sorry Whad, but Willie John was head and shoulders a more inspirational leader than Fitzgerald, as well as being a better player. Playing in 6 Lions tours and his part in two successive Lions tour victories (the pinnacle of the game for Northern hemisphere Rugby) including Captaining the invincibles in SA and the only ever series victory in NZ. Seriously mate, there's very few would see it as a competition.
Wasn't comparing them, Doc.

Just saying that, in his day, Ciaran was seen as the face (and heart) of a very successful Irish team, and in my mind warrented mention in this discussion. If Ollie Campbell was the flair, Fitzgerald was the grit and determination...

I know Willie's the better player, and I already said that he'd be in the next two or three after George Best.

I didn't suggest McBride lost his Irishness because he received an MBE.

Whether someone considers themselves Irish, British or both is a matter for the person themselves. But somebody that considers themselves Irish can't take an MBE, it would have to be an Honorary one.

Oh, and this...

"You're like the Terminator of pointless self importance"

... Makes fuck all sense. We can add 'shit at giving grief' to the long list of things you're rubbish at.
Oh, it does...

You absolutely WILL NOT STOP until the entire forum knows just how 100% right you are all the time. You will not eat. You will not sleep. You will be condescending and arrogant at every possible opportunity. You are absolutely relentless in making sure you yell more, insult first, loudest and most often, and you never, ever miss the chance to talk down to somebody.

You are a machine.

Not if they are Northern Irish.

I'm not being smart here or anything but why don't you just be Northern Irish the Doc?
I am. But because Northern Ireland is part of the UK I have every right to accept an MBE without my nationality being affected in the slightest. It is a liminal political and cultural space. As a lawyer, it would be rather worrying if Ross had no idea about this anomaly.

Just to provide an outsiders view on the McBride v Fitzgerald matter (although it has been pretty much agreed amongst the warring factions).

McBride - best ever captain of the British Lions
Fitzgerald - worst ever captain of the British Lions (was lucky to even get in the squad ahead of Wheeler, and certainly wasn't the best hooker on tour - that honour fell to Colin Deans).
Your British nationality.

You can't claim to be Irish and hold an MBE.
I can if I'm Northern Irish. You're being deliberately obtuse. And a twat.
