The Granuiad reckons Rooneh is leaving Old Toilet.

My take on it is Rooney is a bit thick, unhappy at the moment, and is putty in the hand of his agent.

He'll live to regret the last week or so.

I expect he'll see out the season and then be sold on. I can't imagine Ferguson's going to be pleased that his authority and ambition has been called into question.

I think Rooney had a point, Utd can't compete with Chelsea or City now and their debt problem is every bit as dire as ours was.

Precarious finances and the fact that Ferguson can't go on forever means they are or will be overtaken soon. Can anyone see Ferguson at Utd when Rooney's next contract is renewable?

If he was going to be sold in the summer, he wouldn't have signed a 5-year contract. It protects his value as far as United are concerned, but slightly fucks him. He'll be there a while longer than that, I reckon.

a few years ago Ferdiand was stalling over a contract & he got a visit from the scum balaclava boys ... he signed a new contract.

Last night the same group visited rooney ... and he signed.

I love the message they are sending out here

That's still assuming that this wasn't at least in part orchestrated by Ferguson. The fact that it went public in the way that it did surely must have been.

This is surely the outcome that Utd wanted.

I think so. Say what you will Ferguson always has Utd's best interest at heart. A similar situation to Ronaldo's signing of a new contract before being sold for a huge fee. I wouldn't be surprised if Rooney goes the same way.

Me thinks it's one very clever PR stunt to divert the attention of him cheating on his WAG wife, onto footballing matters.

At the same time, Ferguson has got Rooney to focus on football again. Those fans who vilified him for his previous misdemeanor, realized what a huge loss he'd be if he left, hence they are quick to forgive the lesser evil of his misconduct and forget the other.

I see it as being more like the ronaldo situation than gerrard.
I can see him leaving in the summer if not after, fergie convinced ronaldo to stay an extra season, everything had already been agreed beforehand. The reason stevi stayed was the family situation and lfc was in his heart Rooney has already left his boyhood club.

Wow! Rooney won and Fergie lost for the first time to a player!

That's extreme naive thinking.

All I'll say is that he'll be under massive pressure if his iffy form continues. He has broken the bond of trust the fans had with him and they'll be much quicker to turn on him. That said, a good run of form and he'll be a legend again. Fanz r fickle.

I wonder how the rest of his career will pan out.

Year Games Goals
2004–05 43 17
2005–06 48 19
2006–07 55 23
2007–08 43 18
2008–09 49 20
2009–10 44 34
2010–11 7 1

For the first five years of his United career he was pretty consistent throughout, you could tell exactly what you were going to get. Last season he exploded into goal scoring form when moved into a more central role.

That said he hasn't played well since March of 2010 when he injured his ankle, and coincidentally he's out injured at the moment because of the ankle. He's clearly not 100% still, and I wonder will he ever be.

I posed this question earlier, but the suggestion was dismissed.....was Owen arguably a better player than Rooney at similar stages in their career?

For Liverpool
Age Season Goals
19 97-98 - 23
20 98-99 - 23
21 99-00 - 12
22 00-01 - 24
23 01-02 - 28
24 02-03 - 28
25 03-04 - 19

For England

Age Year Goals
18 98 4
19 99 1
20 00 3
21 01 6
22 02 5
23 03 5
24 04 4
25 05 7

In 74 appearance he had scored 35 goals by the time he was 25. Not to mention, England faired a good deal better in tournaments when he was around scoring goals for England.

So if Rooney does not recover from his Ankle injury and does not hit the heights of his previous years (As it happened with Owen), would it be fair to say Owen was the better player?

Depends on your definition of "better". Goals aren't the only criterion, even for a striker, and I don't think there can really be serious doubt that Rooney has the greater range of skills. Where I do think Owen has the edge is that he's maximised what he has in his locker to a greater extent, so far at any rate.

Rooney and Owen are very different players. Owen is an out-and-out striker, while Rooney is what people of my generation used to call an "inside forward."

Wayne Rooney told Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson he didn't want to end up like Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard - carrying a team with a great history but no future.

Ouch.

Harsh, but it is quite true.

We are quite lucky to have our Captain playing for us and still being a driving force at 30. I really hope he adds a title or two before he retires.
