The Donkey

I feel like Moron is going all Ripley on our squad - that we dust off and nuke the squad from orbit as it’s the only way to be sure…

I just had a look. Big chances missed by Nunez was 27 (league only). Diaz and Salah combined was 30 despite both playing more minutes.

Nunez, "If" he decide to stay needs more game time instead of the 15 mins here and there Klopp was giving him, yes he missed chances, then so did Salah,Daiz and Gapko. I remember Jay Jay Okocha such a wonderful player and a joy to watch. Heah score some wonderful goal, but one season he made a new premiership record for hitting the post and crossbar.a record that has not been surpassed till this day and a player.

So Nunez has missed a few., But we have a new coach now and lets see how he is used under slot

Nunez averages about 60 minutes every time he plays. That’s a blended figure from starts and sub appearances - so it’s false to suggest he only gets “15 minutes here and there”.

In terms of minutes played he was our 6th on the list of most minutes played - playing only 100 minutes less than Salah.

I’m all for keeping Nunez - but this narrative that he’s not been given a chance or played enough is utter nonsense.

The truth is simply he wasn’t particularly good at finishing last season and his stats in the respect are consistent with the majority of his career, bar one that’s increasingly looking like an outlier.

Unfortunately we bought him on the strength of the outlier season and sone people seem to expect that to be his norm - which it isn’t.

Top 10 most big chances misses in PL (and goals scored in brackets, goals to missed big chances ratio at the end)

Haaland 34 (27) 79%
Nunez 27 (11) 41%
Jackson 24 (14) 58%
Watkins 22 (19) 86%
Isak 21 (21) 100%
B Johnson 17 (5) 29%
Salah 17 (18) 106%
Calvert-Lewin 16 (7) 44%
Solanke 14 (19) 135%
Bowen 13 (16) 123%

Most of the top players on that list are bagging a goal per missed chance, give or take. Only Brennan Johnson, has a worse ratio than our boy.

He's in an outlier group with Johnson, Jackson and Calvert-Lewin, and he's second bottom in that group.

The boy needs to learn how to finish.

Now take off penalties. I always think it's crazy to include them (it's just laziness but there are many sites showing non-penalty goals so clearly I'm not alone in this thinking) since any player could be given penalty duty and it makes a huge impact on any statistic (and Nunez has only ever missed that one - that one that hit the post). This isn't to say that Nunez doesn't need to improve as very very clearly he does, and it won't make a massive difference in most cases (it will for some). But it does bias the stats enormously when included.

Excluding penalties. He's still not good enough, but Calvert-Lewin is now nearly as shit as Brennan Johnson.

Lost the debate in your opinion perhaps.

I’m still waiting on the list of players that were run into the ground so that we can see if your opinion is backed up by any facts.

So far all your “opinions” are up there with “the earth is flat”, “the moon is made of cheese” and “we should sign Ryan Fraser in a heartbeat” in being utter fantasy.

Can you now please deduct woodwork hits, or maybe add 50% to the goal total, as it was mostly bad luck? 😈

The goalscoring is a major factor obviously, but in terms of what we’ve been missing after Bobby left then the link up and holding the ball has been lacking as well. His touch can be awful at times. The chaotic pressing and running into channels or behind the defence have been excellent. But all in all our attack suffer from the lack of quality in the all round play. You can see it in our counter attacks. We used to be deadly but now we are usually sloppy and are let down by the final pass.

We were better when making the opposition chaotic with calm heads in our forwards line. Now we’re the chaotic ones and it’s all a bit crap.

This.

I saw one take on it, that our openness embracing the chaos to get overloads - not having set patterns and given more freedom to players to move around, in addition to going more direct which means a higher chance of turning the ball over.

Slot moving to a fast, but short, passing/possession game, which isn’t a huge change for us, will tighten things up no end (in theory).

How many of our big money transfers were average for their first two seasons and then suddenly turned world class?

That’s a fair point.

Bobbie… his 3rd season was his best in terms of goals.

At least you saw consistently what we were trying to achieve with Bobby

Yeah, but you could also argue that a change of manager and a change of perspective allowed him to flourish.

You have to think that one out of Jota, Salah, Nunez, Diaz or Gakpo will have a cracking season for us next year.
