It's hard to choose the best goal of all time, but one of my personal favorites is this goal by Andriy Shevchenko vs Juventus. Everything about it was good – first the dribbling, speed and power to beat 3 players, then the audacious, impossible strike against no other than the great Buffon. Two biggest teams of Italy back in the day when Serie A was the best league in the world and a great striker at the peak of his powers.

Brilliant goal. Gonna post it on my Juventus-supporting cousin's Facebook page. 😀

Jaap Stam was interviewed on the radio a day or two ago and named Brazilian Ronaldo as his most difficult opponent.

That said, I always thought Stam himself was overrated. I saw both Owen and Baros make a fool of him in those days.

I can't be bothered posting any links, but watching these I'm reminded that I'm a very big fan of chipped/ lobbed finishes, and goals that are smashed in on the volley.

I think there's an important distinction between the type of football fan you are.

There's two essential types, based on the sort of goal you prefer:

Type One (Visceral) : the thrill of watching an individual execute some sublime skill: lobbing/ dinking the keeper; twatting one in from 30 yards; a thumping volley; beating 5 men and slotting it in. A fan of joy and excitement and THRILLS.

Type Two (aesthetic/ cerebral): the appreciation of a delicate passing move, or tactical ploy, that evokes a more thoughtful and strategic view of football, and acknowledges the less obvious or lauded skill-set. A cunt.

I'm more of a cunt then. That said, I do love chipped finishes as well as the raw striking power of someone like Roberto Carlos and Riise.

For all-round appreciation, and lovers of every different type of goal, then Robbie Fowler's collection should probably suit every need.

Apart from maybe the blistering run behind the outpaced defence. Owen, Rush and Torres have more of those.
