That either makes us exceedingly narrow ...... or we have Lucas in the hole 😱

Squad according to the Daily Post:

Liverpool FC: Cavalieri, Degen, Agger, Kyrgiakos, Dossena, Aurelio, Riera, Spearing, Babel, Voronin, Ngog, Reina, Benayoun, Lucas, Plessis, Darby, Kelly, Eccleston, Ayala.

Lucas could be captain!

Thank fook for that. I was worried he'd play loads of first teamers for some reason.

It could indeed be Lucas. Wasn't/isn't he skipper of Brazil U-21s?

Me, I'd make Pepe captain for the day if he plays, otherwise Yossi.

it's a squad filled with players that SHOULD be pushing for the first team.

It's a real shame for Pacheco he's carrying a knock.

However, it's not beyond the bounds of possibility to hope Eccleston might get a start on the right. I think he's got enough natural confidence to shine if given the chance.

I'd say Agger - if he starts.

Masher should play and act as captain.
[/quote]

because you don't think he should play at the weekend?

Because we need some leadership in the middle of the park and we're not going to get it from Lucas or one of the youngsters. The fact that our next game is against Hull at home helps of course.

From the article on the Offal re his dad, it sounds as though Cavalieri is playing.

--------------Cavalieri---------------
Degen-Kyrgiakos-Agger-Aurelio-
-----------Lucas--Spearing---------
-Babel------Voronin----Riera---
--------------N'Gog----------------

If that IS the team, make Spearing captain. He does it for the ressies. Otherwise I'd go with Bunny's choice of Agger.

I'd for for agger. isn't he captain at international level?

Agger is just coming back, Spearing is a 'junior' first team player, but Lucas has shown a great attitude this season and he's gone through a torrid time, so i think he deserves it for the night.

For once, macca, I can't agree.  Having the captaincy for this game will mean more than just a ceremonial wearing of the armband, as (a) both Stevie G and Carra will be absent and (b) Leeds will come at us pretty hard.  Yes, Spearing is a junior member of the first team squad, but so will many of his teammates be, and the others - Agger excepted - aren't captaincy material.  The fact that (as you rightly say) Agger's only just come back is my reason for not making him my first choice, but I'd sooner see him do it than Lucas, not least because he (Lucas) will have a veritable gorilla on his back if he's skipper and we get knocked out.

I can see that, yes. But Spearing only usually captains the reserves when Darby is out. If we lose Lucas will get most of the blame anyway. I'd like to see how he reacts to the responsibility of leading the team.

Our senior most player should be Captain, be it Lucas, Aurelio, Agger, whoever.

In principle I can understand that (though I don't agree with it), but how do you decide which one's the most senior?

Agree with Squiggs. Whoever is a regular (or near regular) 1st teamer and has been at Liverpool the longest. You never know sometimes the most unlikely people shine when given responsibility.

If Agger's playing it has to be him - he has captained internationally, I think, and it would be ridiculous not to acknowledge that it a bloody reserve/league Cup match.

If he's not playing then Lucas has captain experience at Under 21 level. Not sure about Aurelio but I wouldn't be adverse to give it to him either. It'll be a nice honour for someone but I can't see there being much contention on the squad about it.

I'm actually really looking forward to the match.

I agree with everything in this post. Especially 'the looking forward to the match'-part.

Btw Agger has captained Denmark and has got all the right attributes really. Would be the obvious choice if he plays tonight and the usual suspects don't.

I'm really shocked at your stance over this mate 😉

Yeah, right. 😉

I'm in a quandry over the team choice.

Do I want to see a host of shite foreigners barely good enough to get on the bench for the first team, or a host of kids that'll never play for the first team?

Decisions.

Haha

You could argue that this isn't my first 'pro Agger' post I reckon.

That said our defence could use some new energy these days, so hopefully he'll stay well clear of more frustrating injuries and get back to his best form.

I'd like to see something like this;

.....................Cavalieri......................

Irwin.........Zorba.....Agger......Aurelio

...............Masher.......Spearing.........

Babel...............Voronin........Dossena

......................Ngog...........................

With Eccleston, Kelly and Amoo getting a bit of the action as well.
